Gandham Moves Into Third Round At ITA Regionals Saturday

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (September 30, 2017) – Freshman David Gandham had a strong day in his first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional, winning his first two matches to advance to the third round in day one action from Skidmore College Saturday afternoon.

Gandham will play Sunday morning in the third round, as he is VC's only remaining singles player after Saturday's action. Gandham knocked off Peter Huang of the University of Rochester in straight sets with scores of 6-1, 6-1 to move into the second round. Once there, Gandham won a thriller over Josh Piatos of New York University.

The freshman out of Ann Arbor, MI won the first set thanks to a 7-5 tiebreaker to earn the early lead, but Piatos came back to win a tie-break of his own in the second to even the match. In the super-tiebreaker, Gandham pushed past the NYU player 11-9 to remain in the field of 16 players.

In other singles play, sophomore Jeremy Auh was topped by No. 1 seed Umberto Setter 6-1, 6-2 in the first round, while fellow sophomore Dom Demeterfi was defeated by Gabriel Sifuentes 6-0, 6-3. Freshman Adam Krueger pushed his first round match to three sets, as he dropped the first set 6-0. The newcomer showed some resolve and nearly pulled the upset, rallying to earn a 7-5 win in the second set, but eventually fell to third-seeded Alan Dubrovsky of Rochester in the super-tiebreaker 10-6.

Sophomore Allen Sokolov was the only other player in the singles draw for the Brewers, dropping a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 decision to William Persson of Stevens Institute of Technology.

In the double's draw, VC's top pairing of Krueger and Auh started the tournament with a huge upset of No. 4 seed McKinley Grimes and Tristan Wise from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, taking down the pair 8-2. Krueger and Auh would fail to earn a spot in the quarterfinals falling 8-2 win over Lucas Pickering and Travis Leaf of Skidmore College.

The other two doubles squads for Vassar would fall in the opening round, as Sokolov and Nicolas Demaria came up short to Peter Huang and Masaru Fujimaki of the University of Rochester 8-6. Gandham and Nick Zuczek fell 8-5 to Danny Polk and Persson of Stevens.

Gandham, along with Krueger and Auh, will continue action at 9 a.m. in Saratoga Springs, NY Sunday morning. The Round of 16 will start at 9 a.m., followed by the quarterfinals, before doubles play begins.
