Last Time Out: Playing without two starters Saturday, the Brewers were able to shake off a sluggish start to roll past the Engineers of RPI 5-1 in Liberty League play from Weinberg Field. Junior
Emily Poehlein netted two goals in the contest, while junior
Megan Caveny, freshman
Grace Amell and sophomore
Rylie Pope all tallied for VC. The win was Vassar's fifth straight home victory, as the Brewers continued to hold an undefeated record on Weinberg Field in 2017.
A Look At The Brewers (6-2, 1-0 Liberty):
- The Brewers offense has been ticking on full cylinders late, posting at least two goals in their last five games.
- Sophomore Rylie Pope has become more involved on penalty corners lately, and she was rewarded for her hard work with her first career score on Saturday to put VC up 1-0.
- The multi-goal game by junior Emily Poehlein was her second of the season, as she also netted two goals in an 11-1 victory over Western Connecticut State on September 13.
- Vassar continues to lead the Liberty League in scoring margin average, as VC has outscored its opponents by 3.25 goals nightly while posting a 33-7 goal split.
- Much of that offense has been to sustained pressure, evidenced by a league-leading 105 penalty corners. VC is third in Division III with 13.13 penalty corners per game.
- The Brewers are allowing 0.87 goals per game, which ranks second in the Liberty League to Skidmore (0.85) while ranking 16th in the country.
- Junior Megan Caveny is fifth in the country in goals per game with 1.38, while also ranking 11th nationally in points per game with 3.00. She is tied for the Liberty League lead in goals as well with 11.
- With the win Saturday, Vassar has not lost a regular season home Liberty League game since October 20, 2012, a stretch of 13 games.
- Vassar starts one of its most difficult stretches of the season this week, playing three of the next four on the road including conference games at ranked Rochester and Skidmore College.
A Look At The Hawks (6-2, 2-0 Empire 8):
- Hartwick is having a strong season in 2017, going 6-2 through its opening eight games. The Hawks are also 2-0 in Empire 8 play.
- Like with Vassar, Hartwick has had success with getting penalty corners, drawing 12.75 per game which ranks fifth in the nation.
- Hartwick is also ninth in assists per game with 2.50, as all but four of the teams 24 goals have been assisted on.
- The Hawks have sent the same starting 10 field players onto the field in every game this year, while the only change in the starting lineup was one game Laura Downey started in cage for Hartwick.
- Claudia Stone has been the catalyst offensively for the Hawks, as she has posted team-bests of seven goals and five assists. Maria Stalder has 10 points on three goals and four assists as well.
- Allyson Quirk has added three goals and three assists for HC, which ranks second in scoring average in the Empire 8.
- Hartwick leads the E-8 in shots taken this season with 179, while allowing the third-fewest goals with 12 on the year.
- The Hawks rank 135th in the country and last in the Empire 8 in saves per game with 4.38.
Against Hartwick All-Time: The Brewers are 5-7 against Hartwick all-time, but the five wins have come over the last five meetings dating back to 2012. VC defeated the Hawks 2-0 last year in Poughkeepsie thanks to goals from
Emma Bracken and
Hayley Beach.
Up Next: Vassar heads out on the road for Liberty League action for the first time this season, traveling to No. 16 University of Rochester (6-2, 1-0 Liberty) Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest September 30.
