CAMBRIDGE, MA (April 7, 2017) – Senior No. 1
Nick Litsky posted his 100
th career win over singles and doubles on Friday with his victory at No. 1, but the Brewer men's tennis team was bested 7-2 by No. 21 Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Litsky has had an amazing run as a Brewer, as the senior posted 13 victories in singles and 11 in doubles as a freshman. During his sophomore campaign, Litsky moved into the No. 1 position full-time and flourished, posted 16 singles triumphs and 10 more in doubles. As a junior in 2016, Litsky racked up a team-best 15 victories along with 11 doubles wins. So far this year, Litsky has gone 15-5 in singles while picking up nine doubles points to get to the century mark.
It was a tough go for the Brewers as a team though on Friday evening, as the match was halted and moved indoors due to rain in the Boston area. In doubles, Litsky and
Nick Zuczek had a chance to take the No. 3 point, as they fought off two match points to even the score at seven. The two would continue to battle, but fell to Sean Ko and Kenny Gea 9-7.
In other pair's action, Alex Cauneac and Bryan Lilley defeated freshman
Jeremy Auh and
Alexander Luckmann 8-2, while MIT (9-1) competed the sweep with an 8-4 decision at No. 2 doubles as Tyler Barr and Albert Go knocked off senior
Juan Felipe Laso and freshman
Allen Sokolov 8-4.
In singles action and after the move indoors, Litsky would take control of his match with Ko, as he earned the first set 6-4 and cruised to a 6-2 win in the second to get his milestone victory. Before that could happen though, MIT picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to clinch the match. At No. 2, Sokolov dropped his match in straight sets to Go 6-2, 6-4, while Laso fell with an exact same score line at No. 3.
The most exciting match of the day came at No. 4 singles, as
Jamie Anderson battled Gea pushing the contest to a super-tiebreaker. Gea took the opening set 6-4, but Anderson charged back to even the match at a set apiece with a 6-4 win. In the super-breaker, Anderson was right there but fell 10-6. The match was Anderson's seventh three-setter of the season, and his fifth in his last six matches.
After the match was decided, the No. 5 and No. 6 positions would play a pro-set to eight games, and VC earned a victory at No. 6 thanks to Luckman. The senior would get past Avi Walden 8-5, taking the first three games and holding off Walden to take the last two games. At No. 5, Auh and Henry La Soya were on serve through seven games, but a break by La Soya put him up for good in an 8-5 win.
The Brewers (9-7) will stay over in the Boston area Friday night for a quick turnaround against Babson College at 11 a.m. Saturday morning in another tough regional matchup.
