Vassar Baseball Game Notes - Bard

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 27, 2017) – After a close loss to SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday, the Brewers will look to bounce back this weekend as they head up the river to take on Bard College this Saturday and Sunday.

Last Time Out:  In his first outing at New Paltz since leaving the program late last October, head coach Matt Righter stepped back onto Loren Campbell field to lead Vassar in the local rivalry game. Despite a strong first inning for the Brewers, the Hawks were able to outlast them, taking the game in a close 4-3 victory. .

A Look at the Brewers (13-15, 6-7 Liberty League):
  • The Brewers have a strong winning record over the Raptors as they are currently 7-2 all time.
  • Continuing his dominant rookie season, Freshman Matt Martino looked strong during the mid-week game, earning an RBI to tie the game up early in the 1st inning. Overall he's been the Brewers' top slugger this season, hitting .382 over 68 at-bats, good enough for 6th in the league
  • Sophomore Taylor Smach also graces the league's offensive leaderboard, edging out Martino for the 6th spot in on-base percentage.
  • Ouch! The Brewers continue to put their bodies on the line at the plate with three sluggers taking 25 hits collectively this season.
  • In his first year on the mound, Junior John Madsen has been nearly untouchable with an ERA of 1.12 over 8 innings.
  • A team first mentality is abound with the Brewers with three earning spots on the league's table for sacrifice bunts and flies.
  • The Brewer offense is working hard, producing 145 runs, with five players hitting above .300, all connecting for at least 20 hits.
 
A Look at the Raptors (8-21, 3-13 Liberty League):
  • As of late, the Raptors have been struggling falling short in their last twelve games
  • They are led by Senior Adam Carafotes who currently averages .354 from 79 at-bats. 
  • Offensively, Bard has a spread of talent, with five players hitting and slugging over .300
  • Bard has found difficulties at the mound, averaging an ERA of 6.53 between the 13 individuals who've thrown for them
  • Carafotes has converted 3 triples this season, good enough to be tied for 2nd in the league.
  • Junior Matt Lasky also finds his name on the league leaderboards as he is tied for second in walks and fifth in on base percentage.
  • Junior David Schlosser has made a reputation for himself as a base stealer, taking ten this season and earning the 2nd spot on the league leaderboards in the category.
 
Up Next: The Brewers will take a break from conference play when they host Manhattanville College on Tuesday, May 2 at 4 PM.
