Brewers Pound Out 17 Hits In 10-3 Win Over Mount Saint Mary

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 19, 2017) – The Vassar College baseball team chalked up 17 hits, one short of its season high, as it rolled to a non-conference victory over Mount Saint Mary College 10-3 Wednesday to extend its win streak to six games in action from Prentiss Field on a cold, rainy day.

The win streak of six games is the longest ties for the longest over the last 15 seasons, as Vassar chalked up a six-gamer last year and a six-game win streak in 2014. The 17 hits were just one shy of a season-best, which was set in an extra-inning victory over New York University earlier this season.

VC (11-12) jumped out on top early, as the first three batters of the game reached on base hits. Junior Matt Hernandez singled up the middle to lead off the frame, followed by a double by fellow junior Bobby Kinne up the left center alley. With runners on second and third, senior Denis Shanagher ripped the first pitch he saw up the left-center gap for a two-run triple. He later would score on a sacrifice fly as he sprinted home after a hesitation by the second baseman.

The Brewers added to their lead in the second frame, as Taylor Smach singled down the left field line, followed by the first of three hits by sophomore Jake Doyle. After a double play, Hernandez came up with two outs and doubled on a deep fly ball to right center to score Doyle. VC made the score 5-0 in the third, as Evan Trausch doubled with one out, scoring on a Matt Martino RBI single to center field.

The runs continued to come in the bottom of the fourth, as Kinne singled in a run to make the score 6-0. MSMC chalked up three runs on a three-run double in the top of the fifth, but that was all the Knights (5-22) would get on the day. VC put another run on the board in the fifth inning, as Doyle doubled down the left field line to plate another.

In the Vassar tacked on another in the bottom of the sixth, and pulled away with three in the bottom of the eighth, thanks to run scoring hits from Shanagher and Trausch.

Hernandez finished 3-for-5 with a RBI and run scored, while Doyle posted three hits in four at-bats. Shanagher continued to star for VC with a 2-for-5 afternoon, driving in three runs while scoring twice, and Trausch upped his hit streak to eight games with a 2-for-4 day, posting two RBI and two runs as well. Kinne was 2-for-4 with two runs and a walk as well, as all but one Vassar offensive starter had at least one hit.

Freshman Billy Mathiesen earned the win for the second consecutive Wednesday, as the rookie allowed three runs on six hits over five innings, striking out three. Martino came in and allowed no runs and no hits, fanning three over three innings, while Robert Pinataro worked a scoreless ninth as well. Pinataro has now worked seven scoreless appearances for Vassar, allowing just one hit over 7.1 innings this season.

The Brewers will now look forward to a huge weekend series with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, traveling to Troy, NY Saturday for a pair of Liberty League games starting at 1 p.m. April 22. Vassar then plays host to RPI Sunday at noon for a conference double-dip on Prentiss Field.
