A Look at the Brewers (2-0):
  • The Brewers have started the season with two straight wins for the first time since 2012. They'll be looking for three straight against the Garnet for the first time in program history.
  • Vassar has held opponents to just eight points over two games — a testament to the team's defensive prowess.
  • The Brewers are outshooting opponents 75-28 overall and 43-20 in shots-on-goal, giving other teams' defenses a run for their money.
  • Vassar has taken advantage of given opportunities, scoring three man-up goals so far this season. Meanwhile, opponents have netted no such goals.
  • VC has held the possession edge in both of its games thus far, thanks to exceptional play at the faceoff X. The Brewers have won 81.3 percent of their face-offs, led by Matthew Lowery, who has won 23 of 28 attempts (.821).
  • Naturally, Lowery leads the ground ball battle with 16 on the young season. Gianni Gelormino is second in that category with seven ground balls, adding a team-leading four created turnovers as well.
  • Sam Houston-Read leads the squad with eight points on three goals and five assists. Michael Mullen is right behind him with seven points on four goals and three assists.
  • The Brewers look to build upon their record-setting season, in which they finished 2016 with an 8-8 overall record. The previous high in wins was six, which had been attained three times before (2015, 2014, 2009).
  • This season, the Brewers are captained by Matthew AltmanBrandon DeStasio, Houston-Read and Liam Moriarty.

A Look at the Garnet (2-0):
  • The Garnet have edged out wins over Alright College and most recently Widener University.
  • In Swarthmore's 15-13 win over Widener, Cam Marsh paced the Garnet with seven points on three goals and four assists, picking up three ground balls as well.
  • The Garnet are narrowly outscoring their opponents 79-75 overall and 47-46 in shots-on-goal.
  • Swarthmore has scored six man-up goals, while holding opponents to just four.
  • The Garnet have won 88.2 percent of their faceoff battles. Stephen Ducey and Andrew Choe have been their primary specialists, going 31-of-46 and 8-of-12, respectively.
  • Naturally, Ducey leads the team with 13 ground balls. Eric Levin is a close second with 10, adding two created turnovers as well.
  • Marsh leads the squad with 13 points on six goals and seven assists, adding five ground balls as well.
  • Nathaniel Johns is second in points with seven (5g, 2a), while Matt Johnson is third with six (3g, 3a).
  • Swarthmore has gotten off to hot starts, scoring 11 goals in the first, eight in the second, seven in the third and fourth in the fourth. Meanwhile, opponents have surged late, scoring five, seven, six and nine, respectively.
  • The Garnet look to build upon 2016, in which they finished 12-6 overall and 5-3 in conference play. They lost in the Centennial Conference Tournament, but won the ECAC Tournament, beating Johnson & Wales University and Stockton University.

Against Swarthmore All-Time: The Brewers are 1-3 against the Garnet all-time, dating back to their first meeting in 2000. Vassar picked up its first win in program histoty over Swarthmore at home last season, winning by an 11-7 decision. Chris Billups and Moriarty led the offensive effort with four points (2g, 2a), Houston-Read potted three goals and Gibbons netted two.

Next Up: Vassar returns to Poughkeepsie, NY to host Mount Saint Mary College on Wednesday, March 8 at 6 p.m. before flying to Florida for a pair of games.
