Vassar Men's Lacrosse Notes — Oneonta

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 27, 2017) — The Vassar College men's lacrosse team  (1-0, 0-0 Liberty) will welcome SUNY Oneonta to Weinberg Field for its home-opener on Wednesday, March 1 at 7 p.m.

Last Time Out: The Brewers opened their season on the road with a 6-5 win over Drew University on Saturday. Sam Houston-Read and freshman Michael Mullen each registered four points on two goals and a pair of assists to lead the Brewer offense. Matthew Boyd earned the win, making five saves over the first 30 minutes.
 
A Look at the Brewers (1-0):
  • With a win over Drew on Saturday, the Brewers have taken their season-opener for the sixth year in a row.
  • Vassar will be looking to open the season with two straight wins for the first time since 2012.
  • Mullen was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Week for his performance against Drew. The entire release can be read here.
  • Fellow freshman Matthew Lowery also starred in his collegiate debut, winning 10 of 14 faceoffs against the Rangers on his way to collecting a game-best eight groundballs. He also tacked on a goal in the first quarter to give VC a 2-0 advantage.
  • The Brewers outshot the Rangers 37-17 overall and 23-13 in shots-on-goal.
  • Vassar also had 17 clears on 20 attempts, while holding Oneonta to 19 clears on 25 attempts.
  • The Brewers look to build upon their record-setting season, in which they finished 2016 with an 8-8 overall record. The previous high in wins was six, which had been attained three times before (2015, 2014, 2009).
  • This season, the Brewers are captained by Matthew Altman, Brandon DeStasio, Houston-Read and Liam Moriarty.
 
A Look at the Red Dragons (0-1):
  • The Red Dragons play five of their first seven games on the road to open 2017.
  • Oneonta fell in its season-opener at home to Misericordia University on Saturday, 9-8 in overtime.
  • The Red Dragons got off to a solid start in their season-opener, leading by as many as 7-4 in the third quarter. Misericordia scored five of the final six points to complete the comeback.
  • Hunter DeLuca led Oneonta's attack with three goals. Jimmy Kickel and AJ Solomito each tallied two, while TJ Kilmetis scored one. Zachary Harned registered a pair of assists, while Jake Loeb and Kilmetis each had one.
  • Troy Stasko won 13 of 21 faceoffs on the way to picking up a game-best eight groundballs.
  • Oneonta outshot Misericordia 45-32 overall, while getting outshot 24-21 in shots-on-goal.
  • Andrew Helfman took the loss for Oneonta, making 15 saves over 63 minutes.
  • The Red Dragons look to build upon 2016, in which they finished 5-9 overall and 1-5 in SUNYAC play.
  • Oneonta graduated 10 seniors from last year's squad, but welcomed 16 freshmen to this year's team.
 
Against Oneonta All-Time: The Brewers are 0-1 against the Red Dragons all-time, having fallen 17-2 at Oneonta in 2007.
 
Next Up: The Brewers hit the road to face Swarthmore College on Saturday, March 4 at 3 p.m. The Garnet are 2-0 on the young season, edging wins over Albright College and Widener University.
