POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 17, 2017) – The Vassar College men's tennis team hosted Liberty League foe Rochester Institute of Technology on Friday afternoon on the Walker Field House, knocking off the Tiger 9-0 to move to 3-0 on the season in conference play.
Vassar (4-1, 3-0 Liberty League) was never tested on Friday afternoon, as the Brewers cruised through doubles action to take an early 3-0 advantage. Freshman pair
Allen Sokolov and
Jeremy Auh topped Jared Ingoglia and Patrick Mathews of RIT at No. 2 doubles 8-1, followed by senior
Juan Felipe Laso and sophomore
Jamie Anderson knocking off Roger Peckham and Ian Dansereau 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
In the No. 1 position of doubles, Vassar senior pairing
Nick Litsky and
Alexander Luckmann outlasted Chandler Daub and Ben Lynaugh on Court 2 8-5. VC would need just two singles wins to claim the match, and Vassar quickly earned those points, as Auh knocked off Mathews 6-1, 6-1 to make the score 4-0.
The match-clinching win would come compliments of Anderson at No. 4 singles, as the sophomore pushed past Spencer Lowitt 6-2, 6-1 to give VC the win. Vassar would push its advantage to 6-0 after a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles by Laso, whose active style worked well in a win over Lynaugh. Litsky would pick up his second win of the day with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Daub at No. 1 singles, followed quickly by a 6-1, 6-4 win for Sokolov over Ingoglia at No. 2 singles.
The most exciting match of the afternoon came at No. 6 singles, as RIT's Michael Peters and Vassar's
Nick Lee finished the day's festivities. On Court 5, Lee earned a 6-2 win in the first set, but Peters pushed Lee to a second-set tiebreak. In the set, Peters led 5-4, but Lee posted two straight set wins to make the score 6-5 before Peters evened the set at six, forcing the tie-break. Once there, Lee was able to help VC to the clean sweep with a 7-4 win.
"It was a good performance by the team today," said head coach
Alex Wong. "I was happy that our doubles fought hard, especially at #1 where Litsky and Lucky pulled off a tough 8-5 win against a very good team. It was obviously great to move into the singles portion of the match with a 3-0 lead, and the guys continued to play well throughout the singles. RIT is a good team that gave us a lot of trouble last year so we are pleased to walk away with a 9-0 win.
"We obviously have to turn the page quickly as we have another conference opponent in Skidmore tomorrow. They are the defending champs and are a strong team but we are looking forward to the challenge of playing them tomorrow."
As Wong stated, Vassar will have a quick turnaround, taking on Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Saratoga YMCA.
