Vassar Women's Basketball Notes — RPI

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 16, 2017) — The Vassar College women's basketball team (12-12, 9-6 Liberty) will finish its regular-season against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at home on Friday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m.

Last Time Out:  Vassar cruised by Bard College on the road Wednesday, 75-45. When these two teams met earlier in Poughkeepsie, the Brewers broke program records for points in a game, field goals in a game, assists in a game and rebounds in a game. This time around, Vassar showcased a similar dominance. Jackie Cenan led the Brewers with a career-high 14 points, while Ariella RosenthalSamarah Cook and Maddie Leong each added 10. Rosenthal also grabbed a game-best seven boards, as Vassar out-rebounded Bard 49-32.
 
A Look At The Brewers (12-12):
  • With the win over Bard, Vassar has taken three of its past four games. 
  • Vassar is tied for fourth in the Liberty League standings, alongside Rochester Institute of Technology (16-8, 9-6 Liberty), and behind Clarkson (15-9, 10-5) William Smith College (16-8, 10-5), and Skidmore (15-8, 11-3).
  • The Brewers shoot 39 percent from the floor, 30 percent from distance and 72 percent from the line, while their opponents have a 38/23/65 split.
  • VC's 22.4 three-point shooting defense is the fifth lowest in the country. Christopher Newport (21.3), Sage Colleges (21.3), Amherst (21.5) and Ramapo (22.1) currently hold opponents to lower percentages.
  • Vassar out-rebounds opponents by an average of 44.3 to 36.6. The Brewers have a 7.7 rebounding margin, a large difference compared to second-ranked RPI's margin of 3.9.
  • Ariella Rosenthal (15.3ppg) and Sophie Nick (12.2ppg) lead the Brewers in scoring. The dynamic duo also lead the team in rebounding with 7.4 and 8.5 respective boards per game.
  • Isa Peczuh (8.8ppg) and Nicole Teta (9.0ppg) maintain their three-point dominance for the Brewers, as they lead the team with 36 and 30 respective triples. Peczuh shoots 36 percent from distance, while Teta shoots 29.
  • The Brewers look to get back to the postseason for the first time since 2013-14, a season in which they advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
 
A Look At The Engineers (8-15):
  • RPI has won two of its past three, most recently topping William Smith at home on Saturday, 66-52.
  • Sam Krumbhaar and Elizabeth Eckhardt dropped 22 points apiece on the Herons to lead the Engineers to victory. The fourth quarter proved to be decisive, as RPI outscored William Smith 20-8 in the period.
  • RPI owns a negative scoring margin of -1.9, having been outscored by an average of 61.2 to 59.3.
  • The Engineers shoot 34 percent from the floor, 27 percent from three and 63 percent from the line, while opponents shoot 36, 27 and 70 percent, respectively.
  • RPI has a positive rebounding margin of 3.9, grabbing an average of 42.8 boards to opponents' 38.9.
  • The Engineers have registered 1.5 more steals than opponents, 9.5 to 8.0, and 0.7 more blocks as well, 3.9 to 3.2.
  • Krumbhaar and Eckhardt are the only Engineers averaging double figures in the scoring column with 12.3 and 11.0 respective points per game.
  • Shaina Iton is third on the team in scoring with 8.6 points per game, and is first with 11.0 rebounds per game and 55 total blocks.
  • Krumbhaar leads the team in steals with 45.
  • Lauren Young has been RPI's primary facilitator, dishing out a team-best 3.9 assists per game.
  • The Engineers are about level with how they played in 2015-16, as season they finished 8-17 overall and 4-12 in conference play.
 
Against RPI All-Time: The Brewers are 15-26 against the Engineers all-time, dating back to their first meeting in 1988. Vassar has taken the past four games, most recently besting RPI earlier this season by a 71-64 decision.
