WORCESTER, MA (February 11, 2017) – The Vassar College men's tennis team got back to business on Saturday afternoon, starting the 2017 portion of its season with a commanding 8-1 road win over Clark University in action from the Paxton Sports Centre in Worcester, MA.
The Brewers did not waste any time getting the spring season started, as they swept doubles' play while winning five of the six singles flights. Sophomore
Jamie Anderson and senior
Juan Felipe Laso put the Brewers on top early on at No. 3 doubles, as the pairing cruised to an 8-3 win over Jimmy Keogh and Ian Levy.
Freshman
Jeremy Auh and sophomore
Nick Zuczek matched the output from Laso and Anderson at No. 2 doubles, taking down Jack Han and Lenny Siegel 8-3 to make sure Vassar would take a lead going into singles action. After the win at No. 2 doubles, seniors
Nick Litsky and
Alexander Luckmann made sure that Vassar swept doubles' play. The pairing knocked off Barun Gill and Andrey Samodaev 8-5 to put VC up 3-0.
Once into single's play, Vassar saw Laso earn the first single's triumph, as he dominated Siegel at No. 4 with a 12-game whitewashing of 6-0, 6-0. Laso is now 4-0 in dual meets this season for Vassar, and is now 5-1 during his senior campaign. Litsky would clinch the match for Vassar at No. 1 singles, picking up the deciding triumph with an easy 6-1, 6-1 decision. The senior leads the team with six victories on the year.
The lone win for Clark came at No. 2 singles to make the score 5-1, as Han knocked off freshman
Allen Sokolov in a three-set thriller. Han took the first set 6-4, but Sokolov rallied to even the match at 6-1, sending the match to a super-tiebreaker. In the super, Han was about to outlast Sokolov 10-6 to put the Cougars on the board.
That would end up being the only victory for the home team on Saturday, as Auh added his second win of the day with a 6-0 win, playing only a one-set match. Anderson would also chalked up another triumph at No. 3 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory, his third dual-meet win of the season, and freshman
Zamir Birnbach pushed past Ian Lavy at No. 6 singles with a 7-6 win, taking the tie-breaker 7-5 to finish the day's festivities.
With the win, Vassar moved to 3-1 on the year while Clark dropped to 3-2 in 2016-17. "It was a good way to start our spring. Clark is a good team that was a good test for us. I'm happy that we were able to take a lead after doubles, and the captains Litsky and Laso helped clinch the match during singles," said head coach
Alex Wong. "They showed their leadership with solid play in singles. We are looking forward to getting back to work as we have two important conference matches coming next week."
Vassar will take on Rochester Institute of Technology at home on Friday, February 17 at 1 p.m. in Walker Field House, before taking on another Liberty League foe in Skidmore College Saturday at 1 p.m. in Saratoga Springs, NY.
