Vassar Men's Basketball Notes — Trinity

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 23, 2017) — The Vassar College men's basketball team (5-11, 1-7 Liberty) looks to get back in the win column against Trinity College (12-6, 4-1 NESCAC) on Tuesday, Jan. 24. Tipoff from the Athletics & Fitness Center is set for 7 p.m.

Last Time Out: Three Brewers reached double figures in the scoring column, as Vassar fell on the road against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at the East Campus Arena on Jan. 17, 69-58. Alex Seff paced the Brewers across the board with 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists; Jesse Browne added 13 points with a trifecta of triples; and Tony Caletti finished with a season-high 12 points off the bench, as Vassar's bench outscored RPI's 20-13.
 
A Look At The Brewers (5-11):
  • The Brewers are shooting 41 percent from the floor and 31 percent from three, taking an average of 6.9 treys per contest. Meanwhile, opponents are shooting 46 and 37 percent, respectfully, taking an average of 8.0 per game.
  • The Brewers have been aggressive on defense, forcing opponents into 13.9 turnovers per game for 12.8 points, while only having 13.1 miscues themselves.
  • Vassar's turnover margin of 0.56 is the second highest in the conference only behind Union College (1.33)
  • Vassar averages 7.00 steals per game, which is the second most swipes in the conference behind Hobart College (7.13).
  • Three Brewers are averaging double-digit scoring in Seff (14.8ppg, 42FG%), Browne (12.8ppg, 38FG%) and Mason Dyslin (11.6ppg, 50FG%).
  • Owen Murray, who has been out with injury, is first on the team in assists per game (2.6) and steals (19). Seff and Browne are second and third on the team in assists per game, 2.4 and 2.3, respectively, and steals, 18 and 17, respectively.
  • Vassar's leading scorers, Seff, Browne and Dyslin, also lead the team in rebounds per game with 5.0, 3.8 and 4.8 respectively. Murray, who hasn't played since Dec. 31, averages 4.9 boards per game.
  • The Brewers have shown flashes of their sharpshooting abilities. In Vassar's win over Keuka College (Nov. 18), the Brewers drained 14 treys, which is the third most threes any Liberty League team has made this season. They also shot 61 percent from three-point range in that game, which is the highest three-point shooting clip any league team has mustered this season.
  • The Brewers hope to get back to the postseason after finishing last year 12-14 overall, including a trip to the Liberty League semifinals.
 
A Look At The Bantams (12-6, 4-1 NESCAC):
  • Trinity has won six of the past seven games, most recently beating Colby and Bowdoin over the weekend by an average of 13.5 points.
  • In Trinity's 71-53 win over Bowdoin, senior Ed Ogundeko recorded game-highs of 20 points, 20 rebounds and three blocks.
  • The Bantams have played better at home so far this season, as three of their four losses have been on the road or at neutral sites.
  • Through 18 games, Trinity is averaging 72.9 points per game, while opponents are mustering an average of 64.2.
  • The Bantams are shooting 45 percent form the floor and 36 percent from three, while holding opponents to 40 and 36 percent, respectively.
  • Two Bantams are averaging double figures in the scoring column: Ogundeko with 17.3 points per game and Chris Turnbull with 11.1 points per game. Eric Gendron has heated up since the start of conference play, averaging 11.4 points through five NESCAC games. Taking all games into account, Gendron is third on the team with 9.4 points per game.
  • Ogundeko also leads the teams with 10.9 rebounds per game and 20 total blocks, adding 13 steals as well. Through five NESCAC games, the senior is averaging 14.0 boards.
  • Langdon Neal has been the Bantams' primarily facilitator, leading the team with 3.4 assists per game. He also averages 6.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.
  • The Bantams look to build off their 2015-16 campaign, in which they finished 19-8 overall and 9-1 in NESCAC play.
  • Last season, Trinity lost in the NESCAC semifinals to Middlebury before falling to Johnson & Wales in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 75-73,
 
Against Trinity All-Time: The Brewers are 1-7 against the Bantams all-time dating back to their first meeting in 1990. Vassar beat Trinity 63-62 on Dec. 31, 2013 before dropping the next two meetings in 2014 and 2015.
 
Next Up: Vassar hits the road for a pair of games, playing at Hobart College on Friday, Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. and Rochester Institute of Technology the next day at 4 p.m.
