Last Time Out
Vassar last competed against St. Lawrence University on Saturday, April 23. The Brewers competed strongly to capture a 7-2 victory on the road. No. 3 doubles duo
Juan Felipe Laso and
Alexander Luckmann finished first with an 8-5 win. Not long after,
Nick Litsky and Udine won at two by the same score. New No.1 pair Cooper and
Gray Thurstone completed the doubles sweep with a 9-8(7) triumph. To clench the win,
Jamie Anderson won 6-1, 6-3 at five.
A Look at the Statesmen (8-7, 3-2 Liberty)
Hobart comes in with a similar record as Vassar. The men last played Rochester Institute of Technology on April 20 and picked up a 7-2 victory. A very young team, Hobart has no seniors and four freshmen, including standout Jonathan Atwater. Atwater has excelled his first year, posting a 13-6 singles record and an 11-8 doubles record with fellow freshman Jonah Salita.
Altwater and Salita ride the longest doubles winning streak into Poughkeepsie, having won their last three matches. Duo Patrick Gray and Harry Nichols have also stood out in doubles and have won their last two matches for a 9-6 mark. In singles, Nichols has won eight of his last 10 for an 11-7 record, and Michael Rusk has won seven of his last 10 for a 10-5 record.
Last Meeting
The last time the Statesmen and the Brewers went head-to-head, Vassar came out on top with a 6-3 win. Despite falling 1-2 after doubles, the Brewers captured five of the six singles matches to earn the victory. The then-No.1 doubles pair, Litksy and Cooper took down two seniors and also took their singles matches. Litsky defeated current captain Michael Rusk 6-3, 6-1 at one.
Liberty League Standings
Vassar (8-13, 4-2) currently stands fourth behind Skidmore College (11-3, 6-0), St. Lawrence University (9-8, 5-2) and Rochester Institute of Technology (7-7, 4-2). Despite the big win against the Saints, the Brewers still risk falling short of qualifying for the Liberty League Championships. Hobart (8-7, 3-2), fifth behind Vassar, could potentially take the fourth qualifying spot.
Quadruple Threat
Each senior on the Vassar squad has contributed tremendously these past four years to the Brewer team.
Daniel Cooper currently boasts a singles winning record of 14-8 at two with multiple impressive victories including a 6-3, 6-3 win over Skidmore's Kit Sanderson. EvanUdine has been a huge factor in doubles, earning a 5-2 record with partner
Nick Litsky.
Sha Huang, who came off a year abroad at the London School of Economics, has a 3-3 singles record for the Brewers, and
Jeffrey Gerwin has a 1-1 singles record for the team.
No Gray Area
Sophomore
Gray Thurstone has stepped up these past few weeks at the No.1 doubles spot with
Daniel Cooper. After battling a shoulder injury since his freshman year, Thurstone has proven his exceptional doubles abilities. The pair captured a decisive 9-8(7) victory against St. Lawrence and defeated the ones from The College of New Jersey on April 20. The doubles specialist gives high hopes for the Brewers in the coming conference game.
Up Next
If Vassar defeats Hobart this Saturday, it will solidify the fourth spot at the 2016 Liberty League Championships at Cornell University on May 7.
