POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 16, 2016) – The Vassar College baseball team fell behind in the second inning and couldn't rally Saturday, as the Brewers fell 11-3 in non-conference action to Stevens Institute of Technology in action from Prentiss Field.
Stevens (18-10) jumped out in front in the second inning thanks to a two-run shot from Michael Mule', and followed that up with five runs in the third inning to take a 7-0 edge. Stevens added another run in the fourth inning on an RBI single.
The Brewers got on the board in the fourth inning, as
Eric Strickland scored a run on a sacrifice fly to left field, reaching on an error. Vassar added two more in the fifth, as
Mike Koscielniak tripled in freshman
Alex Hartnett, while junior
Denis Shanagher also scored a run on a sacrifice fly. The Ducks, head coached by former Vassar standout Kristaps Aldins, added two more in the sixth inning to finish the scoring on the day.
Senior
Cory Wuenschell was 2-for-4 on the day for the Brewers, as the Brewers totaled seven hits on the afternoon. Shanagher was 1-for-2 with a walk, RBI and run scored, while Koscielniak finished 1-for-4 to up his hitting streak to seven games.
The back end of the bullpen for Vassar was strong on Saturday, as three newcomers all pitched a scoreless frame for VC. Freshman
Jesse Mulham allowed one hit in the seventh, while
Joe Conti struck out one while surrendering three hits.
John Madsen finished the game for VC, posting a scoreless ninth.
The Brewers are back in action Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. for a pair of non-conference contests with Western Connecticut State University on Prentiss Field.
