Vassar Women’s Basketball Notes — Puerto Rico Classic

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (December 16, 2016) — The Vassar College women's basketball team (3-4) will travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico to play a pair of games, facing Messiah College on Sunday, Dec. 18 at noon and DePauw University the next day at the same time.

Last Time Out: Vassar ripped off a 14-5 run in the final frame, but ultimately fell 73-52 to Ithaca College at the Athletics and Fitness Center on Dec. 3. Ariella Rosenthal notched her second double-double of the season with a team-leading 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Sophie Nick was one board shy of a double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds.
 
A Look At The Brewers (3-4):
  • With the Puerto Rico Classic, the Brewers jumpstart a four-game road trip. They'll next play in Poughkeepsie on Jan. 6 against Rochester Institute of Technology, which will kick off a five-game homestand.
  • Through seven games this season, Vassar is 2-1 when playing on the road or at neutral sites.
  • Of Vassar's four setbacks, two of them have been by three points or fewer.
  • The Brewers hold a positive scoring margin, outscoring opponents by an average of 5.4 points.
  • The Brewers have shot lights-out, especially from three-point range, shooting 40 percent from the floor and 30 percent from deep. Meanwhile, opponents have shot 37 and 18 percent, respectively.
  • Vassar has been dominant on the glass, grabbing an average of eight more boards per game, 45-37.
  • The Brewers have done an excellent job with sharing the ball, averaging 17.1 assists per contests, while opponents have dished out an average of 8.0 per game.
  • Two Brewers are averaging double-digit scoring: Rosenthal averages 15.6 points per game, while Nick averages 11.6.
  • Nick has also been dominant on defense, leading the team with 9.1 rebounds per contest and six total blocks.
  • Samarah Cook has been the Brewers' primary facilitator, averaging a team-leading 3.7 assists per game.
  • Isa Peczuh has stolen a team-best 14 steals and has shot an impressive 42 percent from downtown with a team-leading 14 triples.
  • The Brewers look to build upon their 2015-16 season, in which they finished 10-15 overall and 7-9 in Liberty League play.
  • This season, Vassar boasts two captains in juniors Rosenthal and Cook, as there are no seniors on the squad.
 
A Look At The Falcons (9-0):
  • The Falcons are undefeated through nine games, with all of their wins coming by double figures.
  • Messiah most recently downed fellow MAC opponent Alvernia University 72-48 on Dec. 10.
  • Through nine games last season, the Falcons were 5-4. They ultimately finished 2015-16 with 19-8 overall and 12-4 conference marks.
  • This season, Messiah has beaten opponents by an average of 29.2 points, holding opponents to an average of 50.9 points.
  • Through nine games, the Falcons are shooting 47 percent form the floor and 42 percent from three-point range, while holding opponents to 36 and 25 percent, respectively.
  • The Falcons have also been efficient from the charity stripe, connecting on 84 percent of their free throws.
  • Messiah has been generous with the ball, generating an average of 13.9 assists per contest.
  • The Falcons have recorded an average of 13.6 steals per game on their way to forcing an average of 22.1 giveaways, while only committing 13.9 turnovers themselves.
  • Four Falcons average double-digit scoring in Kaitlyn Hoff (11.7ppg), Gillian Glackin (11.6ppg), Maci Thornton (11.3ppg) and Jen Fairbanks (10.3ppg).
  • Furthermore, Hoff leads the team with 3.4 assists per game, Gillian leads with 7.9 rebounds per game, and Thornton leads with 32 total steals.
 
Against Messiah All-Time: This will mark the first meeting between the Brewers and Falcons.
 
A Look At The Tigers (8-1):
  • The Tigers ride a five-game winning streak into Puerto Rico, as their most recent loss came against Washington (Mo.) by a 60-48 decision on Nov. 26.
  • Since then, DePauw has dropped Illinois College and in-conference opponents Hiram, Allegheny, Wittenberg and Wooster.
  • Last season at this time, DePauw held a 7-2 record before finishing the 2015-16 season 22-7 overall and 13-3 in NCAC play.
  • Through nine games this season, the Falcons have a positive scoring margin of 17.1, holding opponents to an average of 49.6 points per game.
  • The Falcons have shot 40 percent from the floor and 35 percent from downtown, while holding opponents to 30 and 25 percent, respectively.
  • DePauw also holds a positive rebounding margin of 12.4, out-rebounding opponents by an average of 44.4-32.0.
  • The Tigers average 13.3 assists per game, while opponents have averaged 9.8.
  • The Falcons' downfall has been turnovers, as they've averaged one more turnover per game compared to opponents, 15.2-14.2.
  • Three Falcons are averaging double-digit scoring in Claire Ryan (12.1ppg), Maya Howard (11.8ppg) and Sydney Kopp (11.1ppg).
  • Ryan also leads in total assists (26), steals (16) and blocks (8).
  • Melinda Franke has been DePauw's primary rebounder, averaging 7.1 grabs per contest.

Against DePauw All-Time: This will mark the first meeting between the Brewers and Tigers.
 
Next Up: Vassar will kick off Liberty League play, competing at Skidmore College on Friday, Dec. 30 at 2 p.m. and Union College the next day at noon.
