Vassar Men's Basketball Notes — Rochester Tournament

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 26, 2016) — The Vassar College men's basketball team (3-1) will compete in the Rochester Tournament, which will also feature competition from Elmira College (1-2), Waynesburg University (1-1) and University of Rochester (4-0) this weekend. 

On Day One of competition, Waynesburg will face Rochester on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 5 p.m., and Vassar take on Elmira afterward at 7 p.m. The Consolation Game will take place on Sunday at 1 p.m., and the Championship Game will follow at 3 p.m.

Last Time Out: Vassar (3-1) took its first loss of the season, falling 92-84 to Maritime College (2-2) at the Athletics and Fitness Center on Tuesday. Jesse Browne tallied a team-high 22 points, as 10 Brewers found the bottom the net. Mason Dyslin (16 points), Hunter Gettings (14) and Alex Seff (10) rounded out the Brewers' top scorers.

A Look At The Brewers (3-1):

  • The Brewers boast three captains this season in Mickey Adams, Jesse Browne and Alex Seff.
  • Vassar started 2016-17 with a 3-0 record for the first time since 2008-09. 
  • Two Brewers are averaging double figures: Alex Seff is averaging 18.5 points per game, while Jesse Browne is averaging 16.5 points per game. 
  • Through four games, the Brewers are shooting 47 percent from the floor, while holding opponents to 43 percent. 
  • So far this season, Vassar has an impressive 43 percent shooting clip from downtown, while holding opponents to just 38 percent. 
  • The Brewers have been generous with the ball, averaging 18.5 assists per game. 
  • Owen Murray has played unselfishly during his freshmen campaign, dishing out a team-leading 4.8 dimes per game. He has also been dominant on the glass, grabbing a team-leading 6.3 rebounds per contest. 
  • Multiple Brewers have made a habit of forcing turnovers, as Owen Murray (10), Alex Seff (9), Hunter Gettings (8), Jesse Browne (5) and Mason Dyslin (3) have all swiped steals away from opponents. 
  • The Brewers look to improve upon the 2015-16 season, in which they finished 12-14 overall and 8-8 in conference play with a trip to the Liberty League semifinals.

A Look At The Soaring Eagles (1-2)

  • The Soaring Eagles are 1-2 on the young season with losses to Hilbert College and SUNY Canton and a win over Maritime College in their most recent outing. 
  • Four Soaring Eagles notched double-digit scoring against Maritime: Hayden Harkins (18 points) and Anthony Abate (16) led as starers, while Jeremy Every (12) and Kyle McCreery (11) were dominant off the bench. 
  • Through three games, the Soaring Eagles are shooting 40 percent from the field, while their opponents are shooting 43. 
  • Elmira is connecting more efficiently from deep, however, shooting 41 percent from three, while holding opponents to 26 percent. 
  • Through three games, Elmira and its opponents have both averaged 41.3 rebounds per game. 
  • Three Soaring Eagles are averaging double figures in Hayden Harkins (15.0), Anthony Abate (13.3) and Henry Cuffee (10.0). 
  • Vassar should be wary of sending Anthony Abate to the line, as he has connected on 14 of 16 free throw attempts. 
  • Justin Porrett has been incredible on defense, grabbing a team-leading 4.3 rebounds per game and swiping a total of three steals to lead the team. 
  • The Soaring Eagles look to build upon their 2015-16 campaign, in which they finished 4-21 overall and 2-14 in conference play. 

Against Elmira All-Time: Vassar is 0-1 against Elmira, having fallen in the 1990 Rochester Tournament, 87-79. 

A Look At The Waynesburg Yellow Jackets (1-1):

  • Waynesburg is 1-1 on the young season, with a loss to Muskingum in the season-opener and a win over Frostburg State the next time out. 
  • In their most recent outing, Waynesburg erased a 16-point second-half deficit en route to a 67-66 victory over Frostburg. 
  • Two Jackets are averaging double figures in Jon Knab (14.5 points per game) and Christian Koroly (10.0). 
  • John Knab has also put in work on the defensive end with 18 total rebounds on the season. Brennan Smith has also been active on the boards, grabbing 11 total on the season. 
  • Timmy Kaiser has been the Jackets' leading distributor, totaling 12 dishes through two games. 
  • Waynesburg has picked up its aggression in the second half, totaling 58 points in the first half and 71 in the second. Opponents have scored 62 and 82, respectively. 
  • The Yellow Jackets are shooting 38 percent from the floor, holding opponents to 37 percent. However, Waynesburg has struggled from beyond the arc, shooting 23 percent from three, while opponents have shot 39 percent. 
  • The Jackets look to improve on their 2015-16 season, in which they finished 10-16 overall and 10-8 in conference play. 
  • Last season, Waynesburg advanced to the PAC tournament before falling to Thomas More in the first round, 72-56. 

Against Waynesburg All-Time: This will make the first meeting between Vassar and Waynesburg. 

A Look At The Rochester Yellow Jackets (4-0):

  • Rochester opened the season at Ithaca College before hosing the Chuck Resler Tournament from Nov. 18-19. 
  • The Yellow Jackets have started this season a perfect 4-0 with wins over Ithaca, Alfred University, Washington and Lee University and Liberty League opponent Hobart College. 
  • Rochester has won all four of its game by a commanding averaging of 15 points. 
  • The Yellow Jackets have held edges in multiple categories, outshooting opponents 44 percent to 37 percent from the floor, and 38 percent to 30 percent from three. 
  • Rochester has been generous with the ball, averaging 17.8 assists per game, compared to opponents' 11.8 dishes per game. 
  • The Yellow Jackets have been stifling on defense, averaging 9.3 steals and blocking 5.0 shots per game. 
  • Three Yellow Jackets are averaging double figures in Sam Borst-Smith (17.8 points per game), Mack Montague (17.3) and Zack Ayers (10.3). 
  • Sam Borst-Smith has also been exceptional on defense, averaging team-leading numbers in rebounds per game (7.5) and steals (14). 
  • Tucker Knox has been Rochester's primary shot-blocker, swatting away 10 total through four games. 
  • The Yellow Jackets look to build upon their 2015-16 record, in which they finished 17-8 overall and 10-4 in UAA play. 

Against Rochester All-Time: Vassar is 0-1 against Rochester, having fallen in the 2015 Rochester Tournament, 68-57. 

Next Up: Vassar will continue its six-game road trip at Williams College (Dec. 1), Wesleyan University (Dec. 7), Skidmore College (Dec. 30) and Union College (Dec. 31).
