What To Look ForThe Brewers (8-9, 4-4 Liberty) look to ride some momentum into this weekend after taking two of three on the road. Most recently, Vassar beat Bard College, 65-61, on Tuesday behind
Erikson Wasyl's (Durham, CT/Coginchaug) 21 points. Two other Brewers scored in double figures:
Jesse Browne (Barrington, RI/Deerfield Academy) totaled 12 points and nine rebounds, while
Mickey Adams (Boston, MA/St. Sebastian's School) added 11. The Raptors got within four points with lest than a minute to play, but the Brewers connected on six of their eight free throws in the final seconds to secure the win. Clarkson, on the other hand, will be looking to snap a two-game skid after falling to Hobart College and Skidmore College.
A Look At The Clarkson Golden Knights (7-10, 4-4 Liberty)Taking a look at Clarkson's two-game skid, the Golden Knights fell 59-51 to Hobart on Jan. 16 and 66-61 to Skidmore on Jan. 19. In the game against Skidmore, the Golden Knight's second-half rally fell just short. Derek Hart totaled 15 points with three blocks, as one of three Golden Knights to score in double figures. When Clarkson faces Vassar on Friday, it'll be the first time the Golden Knights compete in 10 days. They're hoping that feeling fresh will help them earn a fresh start in the win column.
Clarkson averages the least points per game (63.3) in the Liberty League. At the same time, it also holds its opponents to the second-lowest (65.5) scoring, which has led to a few lopsided contests. The Golden Knights have struggled from beyond the arc, making just 30.2 percent of its 3-points for ninth in the conference. They're also last in the conference with 33.2 rebounds per game. Felix Abongo is the Liberty League's fifth-best rebounder, averaging 6.5 boards per game.
Against Clarkson All-TimeVassar is 11-19 against Clarkson since their first meeting in 2001. The Brewers look to snap a three-game skid after most recently falling to Clarkson, 69-62, on Feb. 6, 2015. Wasyl scored a game-high 18 points in Clarkson's come-from-behind win.
A Look At The St. Lawrence Saints (8-7, 4-3 Liberty)Like the Brewers, the Saints have won two of their past three games as of Jan. 27. Most recently, they bested Union College 79-70 on the road Jan. 23. After scoring just 17 points in the first half, the Saints stormed back for 62 points in the second. Kyle Kobis and Kyle Edwards scored 17 points apiece in possibly one of the biggest comebacks in school history. St. Lawrence will have one more stop at Bard on Friday at 8 p.m. before traveling to Poughkeepsie.
St. Lawrence has been fairly efficient from the floor, making 43.5 percent of its field goals for second best in the conference. The Saints have also shot well from the charity stripe, hitting a conference-best 73.6 percent of their free throws. Perhaps the Saints offense has been so efficient because of the team's unselfish style of play. St. Lawrence is second in the conference, dishing out 14.4 assists per game. St. Lawrence has also taken care of the ball to have the second-best turnover margin at 1.13 and assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.16. Willie Zachery leads the way with 3.5 assists per game, good for second in the League. On the defensive end, Riley Naclerio ranks fifth in the conference with 1.1 blocked shots per game and seventh with 6.4 rebounds per game.
Against St. Lawrence All-TimeVassar is 10-21 versus St. Lawrence, dating back to their first meeting in 2001. The Brewers look to get back to their winning ways against the Saints this weekend. Prior to dropping the series 0-2 this past season, the Brewers enjoyed a five game-winning streak that spanned from 2012 to 2014.
Iron MenErikson Wasyl leads the conference with 35.5 minutes per game, while
Jesse Browne ranks fourth in that category with 34.8.
Top 10Two Brewers are within the top 10 of the Liberty League's scoring list:
Erikson Wasyl (5
th, 16.5 points per game) and Jesse Brown (10
th, 14.3) earned the honors.
Efficient EriksonErikson Wasyl has been efficient from all over the floor, making 45 percent of his field goals for fifth-best in the conference and draining 44.6 percent of his triples for second-best. The senior's productivity has helped him reach double-digit scoring in all but one game this season.
Glass CleanerFreshman
Paul Grinde (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry Collegiate School) has been holding it down for the Brewers on the defensive end. The center's 1.3 blocks and 7.6 rebounds per game are good for third- and fourth-best in the conference, respectively.
Adams' Addition Since scoring in double figures for the first time Jan. 12 against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute,
Mickey Adams has scored at least 11 points in three of his starts.
Fouling FrenzyThe Brewers have been called for as many or more fouls than their opponents in 11 of their past 12 games. In those 10 games, the Brewers picked up 207 fouls to their opponents' 161.
On The MarkIn six of their past seven games, the Brewers have shot more efficiently from deep compared to their opponents.
Second-Half ScorersThe Brewers have connected on more shots in the second half for six of their past seven games. Looking at those six games, the Brewers have scored a collective 34 more points in the second half.
History MadePaul Grinde made history Jan. 16 when he pulled down the most rebounds in Vassar College men's basketball history. The freshman grabbed 18 rebounds against Union College to surpass
Alex Snyder, who collected 17 against RIT on Feb. 9, 2013.
Up NextThe Vassar College men's basketball team will wrap up its four-game home stretch against Hobart on Friday, Feb. 5 at 8 p.m. and RIT on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 4 p.m. in the Athletics and Fitness Center.
