Box Score 2 POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 3, 2015) – The Vassar College baseball team finished its 2015 campaign in style Sunday afternoon, taking both ends of a non-conference doubleheader with the City College of New York in play from Prentiss Field. Vassar earned a 4-2 win in game one before winning in walk-off fashion in game two 9-8 in extra innings.
Game 1: Vassar 4, CCNY 2The Brewers opened up a 2-2 game in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs, which proved to be the difference in a tightly contested game. CCNY (14-18) took an early lead in the top of the third, as Yoribaldis Olivo singled to start the inning, coming around to score on a throwing error.
Vassar evened the game at one in the bottom half of the inning, as senior
Jason Garfinkel (Encino, CA/Harvard-Westlake) collected the first of his two hits in game one, driving in
Eric Strickland (Round Rock, TX/Round Rock).
The host Brewers took their first lead of the day during the next frame, as
Cory Wuenschell (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) started the rally with a one-out single. Wuenschell moved around to third on a groundout and a wild pitch, and Strickland plated the junior with a line-drive single to right field.
The Beavers came right back in the top half of the fifth, evening the game at two runs apiece after Bobby McDowell scored on a passed ball with two outs. The decisive inning would shortly after though, as Vassar started the fifth inning with a single to left by junior
Denis Shanagher (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius Prep).
Freshman
Bobby Kinne (Great Barrington, MA/Monument Mtn. Regional) gave Vassar the lead for good two batters later, as he doubled down the left field line to put VC up 3-2. Junior
Nick Johnson (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius Prep) gave Vassar some insurance, as he posted his 15
th double of the year to drive in Kinne to give Vassar a two-run lead at 4-2.
That was plenty for sophomore starter
Adam Erkis (Villanova, PA/Radnor), who scattered eight hits over 5.1 innings of work, allowing just one earned run. Erkis handed the ball over to fellow sophomore
Trent Berg (Milton, MA/Boston College High) in the sixth, and he retired all five batters he faced to pick up his first career save.
Shanagher posted a 2-for-3 day in game one, while Garfinkel also went 2-for-3 with a RBI.
Game 2: Vassar 9, CCNY 8 (8 innings)One of the wildest games of the season had one of the weirdest endings you'll see to the end of a game, as Vassar clinched the 9-8 win in extra innings on a walk-off error. On the play, senior
Dan McCormack (Nashua, NH/Nashua) flew out to short right field, but sophomore Brad Kendall (Redlands, CA/Redlands) bluffed an attempt at home before stopping.
After Kendall bluffed, CCNY right field Jacob Sonenshine fired home with a solid toss, but Beaver catcher Nazar Aprahamian mishandled the throw home, which allowed Kendall to scamper home with the winning run.
Vassar led for most of the game, taking a 6-2 lead into the top of the sixth inning after plating three runs in the bottom of the fourth. CCNY didn't go away, scoring six times in the six inning to take an 8-6 lead. The inning was prolonged by an error, which then allowed the Beavers to push across five unearned runs.
The Brewers would not let the season finish that way though, responding with a rally of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Junior
Brooks English (Milton, MA/Milton Academy) walked to start the frame, and after two fly outs, Wuenschell hit a sinking line drive to center field. CCNY center field Bobby McDowell dove for the shot, but could not come up with it, as the ball rolled to the wall, allowing English to score and Wuenschell to get to third.
The next at-bat, senior
Kyle Casey (San Diego, CA/Vista) worked the count to 1-2, and laced a hard ground ball up the middle to tie the game at 8. In the seven, Shanagher came on to pitch and got out of a jam, as he induced an unassisted double play on a line drive at second. During the Brewers at-bat, VC looked destined to win it in regulation, but the Beavers made two outstanding game-saving plays in the field to send the game to extras, setting up the wild finish.
Casey finished his Brewer career with a career game, as he went 4-for-5 with three RBI in the win. Wuenschell posted a double, triple and three RBI, and Johnson added two hits, a run and a RBI. English also led the way with three runs scored, also singling once.
Junior
Johnny Mrlik (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius Prep) allowed three earned runs over 5.2 innings on the mound, and Shanagher got the win after tossing two scoreless innings of relief.

The Brewers finish the season 11-17, winning seven of their last nine games of the campaign. Vassar returns all but three of their 21 letter winners from this year's roster to the fold in 2016.
