Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 2, 2015) – The Vassar offense combined for 19 hits, led by a five-hit, four-RBI performance from sophomore Denis Shanagher (San Francisco, CA/Saint Ignatius College Prep) as the Brewers downed John Jay College 13-5 Saturday afternoon. Junior Jonathan Hong (Orinda, CA/Miramonte) went eight innings on the mound, striking out nine batters to pick up the victory for the Brewers, who now stand at 9-17 on the season. John Jay drops to 3-29 with the loss.
The Vassar offense was grooving early, and busted the game wide open with a four-run inning in the bottom of the third. With two men on and one out, senior Kyle Casey (San Diego, CA|Vista) ripped a two-RBI single to left field to put the hosts ahead 4-2. Later on in the inning, Shanagher came through with one of his five singles on the day, driving in two runs with a shot to left field.
After initially allowing a pair of runs in the second inning, Hong was lights out on the bump for Vassar, not allowing a run to cross for the next five frames. Meanwhile, the Brewer bats went back to work in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring six more runs on seven hits to get up 12-2 on the Bloodhounds.
John Jay managed to plate a trio of runs in the eighth inning, but it was not enough as VC added one more while sophomore Robert Winkelmann (Wappingers Falls, NY/Beacon) took care of business in relief to clinch the eight-run victory.
Senior Jason Garfinkel (Encino, CA/Harvard-Westlake) finished with two runs and two hits, while fellow senior Dan McCormack (Nashua, NH/Nashua) notched two runs, a hit and an RBI. The duo along with Kyle Casey were honored in a pre-game ceremony for senior day.
VC will close out the season tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader against the City College of New York. First pitch of game one is slated for 1:00 pm.
