Early Offense Keys Vassar to 15-6 Win Over Drew

Box Score

MADISON, NJ (April 7, 2015) – Sophomores Sam Houston-Read (Waban, MA/Newton South) and Chris Billups (Watchung, NJ/Oratory Preparatory) led the way with three goals each, while six other Brewers broke into the scoring column as Vassar blew past Drew University 15-6 Tuesday evening. The Brewers used a seven-goal scoring streak between the first and second quarters to go up early on the Rangers, then sealed their sixth win of the year with seven more goals in the second half. VC now stands at 6-5 overall on the season with the victory, while Drew drops to 2-8 on the year in the loss.

Drew struck first in the wet and rainy game at Ranger Stadium with a goal at the 9:57 mark from Hutch Fisher to get ahead 1-0. Vassar took control from then on, going on a seven-goal tear lasting over 15 minutes to bust the game wide open.

Senior Scott Brekne (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) got the Brewers on the board at the 7:42 mark, hitting an open look from the top left to tie the game at one. VC took its first lead shorty after on a Billups goal from junior Shane Flattery (Brewster, NY/Brewster) near the left side. Senior Sean Brazier (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) put a goal away just seconds later with an open blast from the right wing to give VC a 3-1 lead and force a timeout from the Rangers.

Billups notched his second of the game off a dish from sophomore Liam Moriarty (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) to push the lead to 4-1 at the 3:42 mark. VC extended its advantage to 5-1 with 2:28 to play in the first after junior Noah Parson (Cary, NC/Panther Creek) found freshman Jordan Wagman (Lutherville Timonium, MD/Gilman) left of the cage to convert an open look for his first career goal.

Houston-Read kept the scoring streak going into the second quarter, netting his first of the game off a dish from Parson to make it 6-1 Brewers at the 10:39 mark. Houston-Read put another away just a few minutes later off a failed Drew clear hitting a shot overtop his defender to give VC a six-goal advantage.

The Rangers finally halted the scoring surge on a goal from Devin Lyons with 7:13 remaining, but Vassar answered right back with a goal from Moriarty to push the lead back to six, 8-2. The Brewers had a few unsuccessful possessions in the final five minutes, but still carried a six-goal lead into the break.

Drew was again the first on the board in the second half off a goal from Arty Warden to come within five at the 13:41 mark. That's as close as the Rangers would get for the rest of the evening as VC rattled off the next four goals to jump out 13-3 with 9:25 left in the fourth quarter. The Brewers would add two more goals to Drew's three down the stretch of the fourth quarter to secure the nine-goal victory.

Vassar outshot Drew 38-24, while going 2-4 on man-up opportunities and holding a 13-11 advantage on faceoffs. Freshman Erik Mikelinich (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills HS West) made six saves to earn the victory while Jamie Kelly took the loss for the Rangers.

Vassar will be back on the road this weekend to face No. 2 RIT in Rochester, NY on April 11 at 12:00 pm.

Notes:

Junior Noah Parson now shares the school record in man-up goals with Jack Gross ('12) notching the 13th of his career against Drew.

Parson is now tied for fourth all-time in goals (76) in program history with Kevin Krieser ('01) after scoring twice against the Rangers.

Parson has also moved into a tie for ninth place with James Wilson ('98) and Christopher Toffoli ('12) on the all-time list in goals scored in a season, notching his 26th of the year tonight.
