Box Score 2 TROY, NY (April 3, 2015) – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute offense pounded out 30 hits on the afternoon, propelling the Engineers to a doubleheader sweep of the Vassar College baseball team in Liberty League action from Robison Field Friday. RPI earned the first game 8-2, picking up the second win of the day with a score of 18-0.
RPI 8, Vassar 2The host Engineers scored three runs in the bottom of the first, and never trailed as Jared Jensen was able to hold Vassar (1-7, 0-6 Liberty League) to two runs over seven innings of work.
RPI (9-7, 8-2 Liberty League) opened the lead in the opening inning, getting RBI knocks from Nick Palmiero and Jason Ramos during the frame. Vassar got on the board in the third inning, as freshman
Eric Strickland (Round Rock, TX/Round Rock) singled in senior
Kyle Casey (San Diego, CA/Vista), who had earlier reached on a double down the right field line.
The Engineers answered with a run in the third inning to make the score 4-1, but VC again pulled to within two in the top of the fourth as junior
Cory Wuenschell (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) connected on an RBI double to plate fellow junior
Brooks English (Milton, MA/Milton Academy). That was as close as the Brewers would get, as Rensselaer pushed across two in the fourth and fifth innings to end the scoring.
Vassar starter
Adam Erkis (Villanova, PA/Radnor) went the distance for the Brewers, surrendering seven earned runs while striking out four Engineer batters. Shane Matthews was 2-for-3 with three RBI for RPI, while Palmiero added two hits and two driven in for the hosts.
RPI 18, Vassar 0A 10-run third inning busted open the second contest of the day, as the Engineers rolled to the doubleheader sweep. RPI sent 14 batters to the plate in the decisive third inning, as Nick Annunziata doubled in two runs and Jensen blasted a three-run homer to make the score 12-0. That was all the Engineers would need, cruising to the win.
Strickland was 2-for-3 for the Brewers in the nightcap, freshman
Bobby Kinne (Great Barrington, MA/Mountain Monument Regional) doubled and English and
Denis Shanagher (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius Prep) each had a knock for Vassar. Sophomore
Robert Winkelmann (Wappingers Falls, NY/Beacon) struck out three batters in his 1.2 innings of work for the Brewers.
Michael Croke was 3-for-5 with three RBI for the home team, while Jensen finished with five RBI and three runs scored. Greg Echeverria went the distance on the mound for the Engineers, allowing five hits while striking out eight Brewer batters.

The Brewers and Engineers will finish their season series on Easter Sunday, as both teams travel into New York City to square off on the campus of Columbia University at 1 p.m. for another Liberty League doubleheader.
