Offense Lifts Brewer Baseball To Doubleheader Sweep Of Bard

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 25, 2015) – The Vassar College baseball team pushed its season-high win streak to three games Saturday, pounding out 29 hits in winning both ends of a Liberty League doubleheader with Bard College. VC picked up wins with scores of 13-3 and 10-4.

Vassar 13, Bard 3
In the opener for the afternoon, Vassar's offense chalked up runs in five of the six innings, including tallying five times in the fourth to pull away for the win. After the Raptors scored in the top of the first, Vassar matched with a run in the bottom half as Nick Johnson (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius Prep) plated a run on a sacrifice fly.

The Brewers posted two in the bottom of the second, getting a pair of RBI ground outs in the frame. An inning later, Vassar chalked up three straight doubles with two outs to score two runs, and a throwing error on a Cory Wuenschell (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) stolen base allowed another run to come in.

The big inning for Vassar came in the fourth inning, blowing open the game as VC posted five runs on four hits. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of junior Dakota Sagnelli (Rumson, NJ/Rumson Fair Haven), who drove in Johnson and freshman Bobby Kinne (Great Barrington, MA/Monument Mtn. Regional).

That was plenty of run support for Vassar starter Adam Erkis (Villanova, PA/Radnor), who picked up the win after going the distance, allowing two earned runs on 10 hits, striking out five Raptor hitters. Wuenschell finished with a 4-for-4 contest, scoring four times and driving in a run, while senior Kyle Casey (San Diego, CA/Vista) was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs score.

Junior Brooks English (Milton, MA/Milton Academy) was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, and Kinne and Sagnelli each posted two hits in the win. Senior Dan McCormack (Nashua, NH/Nashua) drove in two runs as well for Vassar, and Johnson added a double and two RBI. David Schlosser had three hits in game one for Bard.

Vassar 10, Bard 4
The Brewers scored all 10 of their runs from the fourth through the seventh innings, and junior Johnny Mrlik (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius Prep) tossed his first complete game since April 6, 2013 as Vassar captured its first doubleheader sweep of the season.

Like game one, the Raptors took an early lead in the top of the second, pushing across a run on a wild pitch by Mrlik. An inning later, Bard (5-24, 1-17 Liberty) added two more runs to its advantage, taking a 3-0 lead after RBI knocks from Adam Carafotes and Alec Montecalvo.

The bats for the Brewers woke up though in the bottom of the fourth inning, as English started the frame with a ringing triple into the right-center gap. English scored on the next batter, as Kinne lined a double down the left field line to get VC on the board. Kinne would come around on a wild pitch, pulling Vassar to within one at 3-2.

In the fifth inning, the host Brewers knotted the score at three, as English drove in senior Jason Garfinkel (Encino, CA/Harvard-Westlake), who had earlier singled up the middle. Vassar would take the lead for good in the sixth, scoring twice of relief pitcher Jeff Goldrosen, though he nearly worked out of a bases loaded, no outs jam. With one out, Goldrosen threw what appeared to be an inning ending double-play ball, but the call at first was safe, extending the inning where VC pushed across two runs.

The hosts would cushion their lead in the seventh, as Garfinkel provided a two-run single and Casey also drove in a run with a single. Mrlik cruised though, finishing the game in 127 pitches, allowing eight hits and three earned runs while striking out eight Bard batters.

Casey had another outstanding game in the nightcap, going 3-for-4 with two runs, while Garfinkel was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Denis Shanagher (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius Prep) had two hits in five at-bats, and English and Johnson each finished with two hits as well.

The Brewers (7-15, 6-14 Liberty) finish conference play tomorrow afternoon at noon with another doubleheader with the Raptors, traveling to Annandale-on-Hudson, NY to see their first action on newly completed Honey Field on the campus of Bard College.
