Last Time Out RPI senior Casey Colligan scored a man-up goal with 21 seconds on the clock in the fourth quarter, as the No. 18 Engineers broke the tie and held off Vassar 9-8 on March 21. The goal was one of two for the visitors in the final minute of play in a game that saw five lead changes and seven goals scored in the fourth quarter.
A Look at the Knights (3-4, 0-0 Skyline) Mount Saint Mary College enters Wednesday's tilt 3-4 on the season, coming off a pair of losses to Plattsburgh State (March 21) and Manhattanville College (March 18) in the team's past two games. The matchup with Vassar will be one of the final non-conference games for Mount Saint Mary before starting competition in the Skyline Conference, where the Knights finished 1-5 last season. Head coach Eric Seideman is at the helm for his fourth season with the Knights, and is just the second-ever head coach for the program, which got its start in NCAA Division III in 2010.
Senior Jake Robinson leads the Knights offensively this season, posting team-highs in both goals (11) and assists (9) through seven games. Robinson is one of six Mount Saint Mary players to record at least eight goals this season, as the Knights support a fairly balanced attack.
Freshman Christopher Doerr has started in between the pipes all seven games for the Knights, holding a 12.38 GAA and a 52.8% save percentage. Junior Brendan Nestola has been the team's main option on faceoffs, winning 71-138 for a .514 faceoff pct. this season.
Against Mt. St. Mary (NY) All-TimeThe Brewers have faced Mt. St. Mary just twice in the all-time series, going 1-1 against the Knights since the series started in 2013. Last season, MSM earned a 10-9 victory on a goal from then-junior CJ Cardo in the fourth quarter to halt a furious comeback bid from the Brewers.
Super Sophomores The sophomore class on this year's Brewer squad has produced some of the team's biggest contributors, accounting for 42.6% (26) on the team's goals and 61.8% (21) of Vassar's assists this season. Second-year players (13) make up nearly half of the squad's roster (30) this season.
Streaks Junior
Noah Parson (Cary, NC/Panther Creek) has a six-game goal and point streak going right now, scoring in every game so far this season for Vassar. Sophomore
Brandon DeStasio (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade) saw his assist streak snapped at five games against RPI, but still has a six-game point streak alive with at least one point in every game thus far. Senior
Scott Brekne (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) has a 13-game ground ball streak dating back to March 29 of last season, scooping up at least one in every game since then.
Faceoff ForteVassar's 21 faceoff wins against Adams State are the most in school history since at least 2002, topping the team's previous game-high of 19 against Kean University on February 27, 2013.
Senior
Scott Brekne (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) has been outstanding on faceoffs for the Brewers this season, winning 29 of 41 restarts for a whopping .707 faceoff pct. Brekne is quickly approaching 300 career faceoff wins, coming into Saturday's game with 294 in the burgundy and gray.
Parson Making Moves Junior
Noah Parson is now seventh all-time at Vassar in both career points (91) and goals (63) heading into Wednesday's game. Parson sits behind Nick Cardillo ('10) on the all-time points list (101) and Jack Gross ('12) on the all-time goals (66) list.
Parson is also inching toward the school record in man-up goals, coming into Wednesday's matchup with 11 in his career. He now sits just two extra-man goals behind Jack Gross ('12), who finished his Brewer career with a program-record 13 man-up goals.
Don't Call it A Comeback Vassar's 9-8 comeback victory over Western Connecticut on March 12 was one of the biggest in school history, and the largest come from behind win for the Brewers since at least 2002. After going down 7-1 in the first half, VC rallied to outscore the Colonials 8-1 in the second half to erase the six-goal deficit. Vassar's previous best comeback in the modern era was a 9-7 triumph over Curry College on March 15, 2003 when VC came back to win after being behind four.
Up NextVassar will play its first Liberty League road contest of the season on Saturday, March 28 when the team travels to face Skidmore College at 1:00 pm in Saratoga Springs.
