CLAREMONT, CA (March 16, 2015) – Vassar's depth was on display Monday afternoon, as the No. 30 Brewers rallied for a 5-4 dual match victory over the 17th ranked University of La Verne Leopards. Despite losing two of three doubles matches, VC made up the difference in singles winning the No. 3-6 matchups to earn the team win. Vassar improves to 3-2 on the season with the victory, handing the Leopards (6-1) their first dual match defeat of the season.
At No. 1 doubles, seniors Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) and Ava Sadeghi (Glendale, CA/Campbell Hall) teamed up for another win, topping Laina Matsuda and Bridget Etchegaray 8-6. The Brewers came up just short in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches, and headed into singles play in a 2-1 hole.
The Brewers got a boost from freshman Morgan Fitzgerald (Encinitas, CA/Cal Coast Academy), as she tied the match with 6-2, 6-0 win over Shenelle Trujillo at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Emily Hallewell (Washington, DC/Stone Ridge Sch. Sacred Heart) then picked up a win in the No. 4 match vs. Lauren Torres 6-1, 6-3, while Schapiro earned a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Bridget Etchegaray at No. 3 to put the Brewers ahead 4-2.
Freshman Kate Christensen (Los Angeles, CA/Connections Academy) and La Verne junior Andrea Madrigal played a rematch at No. 1 singles after previously facing each other the ITA Small College National Quarterfinals back in October. It was Madrigal who came out ahead this time, earning a 6-3, 6-4 victory to bring the head-to-head score to 4-3.
Junior Winnie Yeates (New Orleans, LA/Isidore Newman School) sealed the victory for Vassar in the No. 5 match, grinding out a tough 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 three set victory vs. Janae Chinn to give Vassar the decisive fifth point. Sadeghi also played a gritty three set match at No. 2, but came up short to Matsuda 4-6, 6-0, 6-4.
VC will return to the court tomorrow at 2 pm (PT) to face Pomona-Pitzer in Claremont, CA.
