Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (January 3, 2015) – Skidmore College connected on 10-of-20 from three-point land Saturday afternoon, as the Throughbreds chalked up a 78-66 Liberty League women's basketball victory over Vassar College in action from Williamson Sports Center.
The opening period saw both team gain leads, with Vassar's largest edge coming at 14-9 following a jumper by
Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) with 13:28 to play in the period. Skidmore would respond by rallying to take its biggest edge at 30-23 after a three-pointer from Veronica Moceri.
VC cut into the lead at the break, and
Kim Romanoff (Durham, CT/Coginchaug Regional) nailed a jumper right before the half to trim Skidmore's lead to 35-33 at the break. Freshman
Ariella Rosenthal (Mill Valley, CA/Redwood) led the Brewers with 11 points at the intermission, while Lindsey Davis nailed four three-pointers and posted 16 points in the opening stanza for the host Thoroughbreds.
Vassar came out of the gate in the second half and took its second lead of the game, holding that advantage until a three from Molly McLaughlin at 14:37 gave SC a 43-41 edge. The Brewers would tie the game at 47, but an 8-2 run by Skidmore (6-4, 2-0 Liberty League) pushed the Thoroughbreds ahead for good.
Rosenthal finished with a game and career-high 24 points for the Brewers, as she made 9-of-17 from the floor. The freshman also pulled in seven rebounds and corralled three steals for Vassar, while Drakeley posted 22 points and nabbed nine boards. Junior
Colleen O'Connell (Maywood, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) continued her double-double streak of late, as she collected 10 points and grabbed a team-best 13 caroms.
The loss for VC was its second straight Liberty League defeat, which was the first time since February 11, 2011 that the Brewers have dropped back-to-back conference games. The Brewers connected on 30.7 percent (23-75) from the field, and hit a season-high five threes on the contest. The four three-pointers made by Rosenthal were the most by a Vassar player this season. VC won the rebounding battle 50-43.
Angela Botiba posted 19 points and a game-high 15 rebounds for the Thoroughbreds, grabbing three steals as well, while Davis finished with 17 points. McLaughlin added 14 points and five helpers, while Amber Holgate also earned 15 points and seven boards. Skidmore made 47.6 percent from the floor, connecting on 30 of the 63 shots it took.
The Brewers (5-6, 0-2 Liberty League) will host its first Liberty League game of the 2014-15 season on Tuesday, taking on Bard College at 6 p.m. in action from the Athletics and Fitness Center.
