WILLIMANTIC, CT (January 24, 2015) – The Vassar women's swimming team split a pair of head-to-head decisions Saturday afternoon, topping Eastern Connecticut State 162-99 while falling to Roger Williams 165.5-95.5 in a tri-meet at Sports Center Pool. The loss was the first in a dual meet for Eastern Connecticut this season, as the Warriors now stand at 5-2 on the year after falling to Roger Williams 194-67. The Brewers move to 4-5 on the year heading into the final weeks of the season ahead.
"Though we would have liked to go 2-0, it was nice to split and see this team compete hard today," said head coach Lisl Prater-Lee. "It was also great to have support from our athletic training staff getting this group prepped for an intense meet."
Senior Olivia Harries (Temple Terrace, FL/Lee Academy) had a solid day in the pool for the Brewers, starting first with a win in the 1000 yard freestyle. Her time of 11:00.32 topped the field, while she later went on to take fourth in the 200 free (2:04.09) and third in the 200 back (2:23.06).
Senior Zoe Fullerton (Los Angeles, CA/Pallsades Charter) was the top Brewer in the 200 yard IM, finishing in 2:25.33 to take third overall in the event. Junior Marie Schmidt (Homer, AK/Homer) bested the field in the 500 yard freestyle, touching the wall first with a time of 5:36.25.
Junior Milee Nelson (Champaign, IL/University Laboratory) was consistent for the Brewers throughout the meet, notching a pair of third place finishes in the 1000 free (11:35.38) and 100 back (1:05.75). Nelson went on to take fourth in the 100 fly with a mark of 1:04.71.
Sophomore Julia Cunningham (Yardley, PA/Peddie School) added three more wins to her season total, finishing first overall in the 200 fly (2:10.22), 200 breast (2:30.02) and 100 fly (1:00.35).
In relay action, Nelson, Kuo, Cunningham and Balter combined to finish second of nine squads in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:56.49. The team of Harries, Schmidt, Frye and Balter finished as the top Brewer squad in the 400 yard freestyle relay (3:57.94) to close out the meet.
The Vassar swimming and diving teams will have one last meet to tune up before the UNYSCSA Championships February 18-21, first competing at the Skidmore College Sprint Invitational next weekend on Saturday, January 31.
