Box Score Game ProgramPOUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 8, 2014) – A strong offensive push to start the second half followed by an iron wall defense propelled the Vassar College men's lacrosse team past visiting Drew University 9-8 on Tuesday evening at Weinberg Field.
Sophomore
Colin Cederna (Milan, MI/Saline) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal off an assist from freshman
Liam Moriarty (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) at 11:25 in the fourth quarter. The Brewers' (6-5, 1-2 Liberty League) win was set up after a strong, 3-1 third quarter scoring effort.
Freshman
Sam Houston-Read (Waban, MA/Newtown South) grabbed a pass from senior
Max Herman (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) and found twine with 31 seconds left in the quarter for what was the game-tying goal. The goal, at the time, gave Vassar the 8-7 lead.
Junior
Sean Brazier (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) and Cederna also scored in the third quarter from assists by Herman. Herman finished the evening with a game-high three assists and also tacked on a goal for the game's best point performance of four. Cederna had two scores and an assist while Brazier found twine twice in total.
Also scoring for Vassar was freshman
Matthew Altman (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield), sophomore
Shane Flattery (Brewster, NY/Brewster) and junior
Scott Brekne (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville). Freshman
Chris Billups (Watchung, NJ/Oratory Preparatory) also recorded a point with his assist.
The Rangers (3-8, 1-3 Landmark) were lead by Andrew Somps' two goals and one assist while Steven Cola and their leading scorer Mike Marone each tallied two scores of their own. Aaron Davis had one goal and one assist and Al Faiella scored once in Drew's loss.
This was the first time in Vassar history that the Brewers bested the Rangers in the two programs' short series. The victory would not have been possible if it wasn't for the solid performance of senior goalie
Andrew Nicol (Carmel, NY/Brewster). Nicol had 14 saves from 22 shots on goal, facing a total of 31 shots while also gathering five ground balls.
The Brewers won over half of the faceoffs with two of their 11 wins occurring from Ranger violations. Vassar was lead by Brekne's 9-of-13 performance from the dot and Moriarty won 2-of-7.
Drew out-scavenged the Brewers 33-32 on ground balls despite Brekne leading the game with six. Nat Putnam, Kevin Cleary and Aaron Davis all had five grabs.
The Brewers will next host #1 nationally-ranked Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday, April 12 at noon in Liberty League action. The game is slated to be played on the natural turf of Gordon Field, but pending weather conditions might force play to occur on the neighboring artificial turf of Weinberg Field.
