Box Score CANTON, NY (April 5, 2014) – An early 8-2 first half lead and a total of seven goals from one player paced the St. Lawrence Saints past the Vassar College men's lacrosse team 13-8 on Saturday afternoon in the snow.
Tommy Hovey took nine shots and found twine on seven of those to lead the Saints (6-3, 2-1 Liberty League). Junior
Sean Brazier (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) was the Brewers' (5-5, 1-2 Liberty League) top points-earner with two goals and two assists.
The Brewers got off to a good first quarter despite the Saints piling five goals on the board. Vassar managed two scores on the board but didn't score again until the third quarter. St. Lawrence checked another three goals in the second half.
The only Brewers to score in the first half were Brazier and fellow junior and high school teammate,
Scott Brekne (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville). Brekne took a throw from Brazier to get Vassar's first goal at 8:25 in a man-up situation and Brazier scored an unassisted tally at 3:32.
Vassar's offense came alive in the third quarter after Hovey scored his sixth goal of the game from a Jeremy Vautour pass at 13:04. Freshman
Liam Moriarty (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) was the first Brewer to find a scoring opportunity at 12:18, bringing Vassar within six, 3-9. Alden Frelinghuysen scored the final Saints goal of the quarter almost three minutes later.
Vassar got their second man-up goal with 2:12 left in the period when Brazier found an open freshman,
Sam Houston-Read (Waban, MA/Newtown South) for the beginning of the Vassar, three-goal run. Moriarty spotted an open Brazier at 1:40 for the score and just 10 seconds later, Houston-Read picked sophomore
Colin Cederna (Milan, MI/Saline) out of the crowd of rushing players down the field for the score.
Freshman
Brandon DeStasio (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade) and senior
Max Herman (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) scored unassisted goals at 9:49 and 6:12, respectively in the fourth quarter.
Senior
Andrew Nicol (Carmel, NY/Brewster) recorded 18 saves out of the 31 shots on goal. Nick Ford picked up the win for the Saints in goal with eight saves.
DeStasio was the team-leader in ground balls for the Brewers with four while Ryan Brigham came off the sideline to grab eight while going 12-for-16 on faceoffs for St. Lawrence. Caleb Kane forced a game-high five caused turnovers out of the Saint's 15. Vassar only had three in total.
The Brewers will next return to Weinberg Field to host the Rangers of Drew University on Tuesday, April 8 at 7:00 pm. It is one of their last two non-league games for the season.
