Men's Tennis Tops Hobart 7-2 In Regular Season Finale

Results

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 26, 2014) – The Vassar College men's tennis team rounded out its regular season with a 7-2 Liberty League win over Hobart College Saturday afternoon at Josselyn Tennis Courts.

Despite falling at No. 1 doubles with partner Alexander Luckmann (Berkeley, CA/Head-Royce School) 8-5 to Michael Field and Matt DePrima, sophomore Daniel Cooper (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) came back from a second set loss at No. 1 singles with Statesmen Fields to clinch the victory for the Brewers. Cooper's final score was 6-0, 3-6, 6-4.

Vassar had two players step into the spotlight despite not seeing much action this year. Junior William Zhu (San Francisco, CA/Lowell) teamed with freshman Nick Litsky (St. Petersburg, FL/Shorecrest Preparatory) at No. 3 doubles for the 8-3 win over Carson Smith and Ben Robinson. Sophomore Jeffrey Gerwin (Fairfax, CA/Sir Francis Drake) won at No. 6 singles having to go to a third set after winning the first 6-4 and dropping the second 6-1 to RIT's Smith. Gerwin swept the Tiger 6-0 in the extra set.

"A really nice win against a tough Hobart team today. We had to shuffle the lineup around a little but everybody stepped up today," said head coach Alex Wong. "Will Zhu gave us a solid performance at third doubles today and Jeffrey Gerwin gave us a hard fought win at number six singles. The match was really close with four of the singles matches going to third sets, but remarkable that we were able to earn wins in each one if those matches."

Sophomores Christian Phelps (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire Memorial) and Evan Udine (Delray Beach, FL/Boca Raton Community) topped Michael Rusk and Danny Kot 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. Udine then beat Kot 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-1 at No. 4. Litsky defeated Rusk in matching 6-2 sets at No. 2. Luckmann got a three-set win at No. 5 against Jake Criss, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1.

"It is really nice to get a win against a conference opponent and we look forward to bringing this momentum to the Liberty League Championships next weekend," said Wong.

The Brewers next look towards the Liberty League playoffs on Friday, May 2. Time and location still to be determined. The #1, #2 and #3 seeds will be tough to determine since Vassar and Skidmore College are 5-1 in League play with the Thoroughbreds owning the tiebreak over the Brewers and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is 4-1 in the League, having defeated Skidmore but falling to the Brewers.
