Seniors
Max Herman (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and
Andrew Nicol (Carmel, NY/Carmel) were honored pregame for their accolades as Brewers, as Herman sits as the program's all-time leading goal and point's scorer. Nicol was a three-year captain in net for Vassar, and has been the emotional leader of the defense since his freshman campaign.
The first quarter was what doomed Vassar (6-9, 1-5 Liberty), as the Golden Knights scored six goals in the opening period to take a 6-2 lead. Vassar netted the first tally of the second period to trim the lead to three, but CU (7-7, 1-5 Liberty) answered with three goals, taking a 10-4 lead into the break.
After the intermission, the defense for both teams clamped down, with each team striking just once in the third period. In the end, Clarkson's defense and goalkeeper Nick Strandholm would clinch the win for the visitors.
Sophomore middie
Shane Flattery (Brewster, NY/Brewster) scored twice on seven shots Saturday, picking up three ground balls, while teammate
Liam Moriarty (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) had two goals, an assist and six ground ball pickups. Freshman attack
Chris Billups (Watchung, NJ/Oratory Prepatory) added a goal and an assist, and
Scott Brekne (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) notched a goal to go with three ground balls. Freshman
Brandon DeStasio (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade) also added five ground balls for VC.
The Brewers saw Nicol make nine saves in net Saturday, as they outshot Clarkson University by a slight 39-38 edge. Vassar College couldn't take advantage of eight extra-man opportunities, going scoreless with the man advantage.
Jack Dowst had three goals and an assist for Clarkson, while James Wright and Mark Nortz each posted multiple-goal affairs. Standholm had a big game in the cage for the Golden Knights, stopping 17 shots that came his way. CU also won the ground ball battle, 44-37.
Vassar College finishes its 2014 season with six wins, which ties for the program record, while also capturing its first-ever home Liberty League win this year.
