COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (March 16, 2014) – A big, 10-goal first half propelled the Vassar College women's lacrosse team past Denison University of Sunday evening 16-11 at Colorado College's Washburn Field. The win concludes the Brewers' (2-1) spring break trip.
Vassar was 5-of-7 from free position attempts with junior
Dara Davis (Guilford, CT/Guilford) benefiting the most, going 2-of-3 on her four-goal showing. Sophomore
Isabelle Goldstein (Belmont, MA/Belmont) also netted four shots on Sunday. Three other Brewers had two goals and another two added one apiece.

Phoebe Tzannes (Lexington, MA/Lexington) both led Vassar with two assists each. Tzannes also won five draw controls for the game-high. Davis tied the game-best with the Big Red's (2-1) Lauren Adams with four ground balls each.
Denison got the early 2-0 lead in the first four minutes of play from a Molly Chapman pass to Erin Keller at 28:20 and then Chapman got an unassisted goal at 26:12. Goldstein began Vassar's response with a solo goal less than a minute later. Senior
Malena Harrang (Bellevue, WA/Forest Ridge School) got the connecting pass from Tzannes at 23:37 for the game-tying goal and then senior
Zoe Ripecky (Chicago, IL/St. Ignatius College Preparatory) took the 3-2 lead with an unassisted score at 20:55.
Three Big Red players scored three of the next four goals before the Brewer offense opened the scoring flood gates with a 6-1 scoring effort. Davis had all four of her goals in the spree including her one player-up shot.
The Brewers scored the game-winning goal from Ripecky within the first seven minutes of the second half after freshman
Julia Trudell (Newtown, CT/Newtown) got her first of the game. Freshman
Phoebe Hankins (Belvedere, CA/San Francisco University) scored her first collegiate goal in the final 16 seconds of play off an assist from Goldstein.
Junior
Kate Pula (Washington Township, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) played all 60 minutes for the Brewers and stopped 9-of-20 shots on goal from the Big Red. "Today was another great effort against a strong Denison team," said head coach
Judy Finerghty. "Kate [Pula] had nine saves which kept us in the game."
Ansley Gibson earned the loss for Denison by allowing 12 goals and only stopping four shots. Laura Van Horn came in for relief, allowing four balls past her and stopping two.
Denison forced nine turnovers while the Brewer defense had only three caused possession changers. In total turnovers, the Brewers had 17 and the Big Red gave up the ball 13 times. The Brewers had the 17-12 draw control advantage.
The Big Red owned the 27-22 ground ball deficit. Vassar was 14-of-18 in clear attempts while Denison completed 10-of-14.
The Brewers will next play in the Hudson Valley when they travel to local Newburgh, NY to face Mount Saint Mary College on Tuesday, March 18 at 5:00 pm.
