CLAREMONT, CA (March 12, 2014) – The Vassar College women's tennis team was swept by nationally-ranked #10 Pomona College 9-0 on Wednesday at the Pauley Tennis Complex during the Brewers (2-3) California spring break trip.
Junior
Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) had two close matches at the No. 1 position for both singles and doubles. She teamed with freshman
Shayna Becker (Murrieta, CA/University) in an 8-5 defeat to Sammy Chao and Lea Lynn Yen. Schapiro met Chao again in singles, falling 6-2, 6-4.
The remaining doubles teams with the duo of
Emily Hallewell (Washington, DC/Stone Ridge School Sacred Heart) and
Winnie Yeates (New Orleans, LA/Isidore Newman School) and the pair of
Lauren Stauffer (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) and
Kelsey Van Noy (Houston, TX/Duchesne Academy Sacred Heart) both had close matches early in the match.
The No. 3 team of Stauffer and Van Noy had a fair match against Mae Coyiuto and Arthi Padmanabhan but fell in the end, 8-4. The No. 2 squad dropped to Maddie Gordon and Rosemary Pelch 8-3.
Besides Schapiro's stay at No. 1 singles, Hallewell had a strong first set at No. 2 but fell to Coyiuto 6-4, 6-0. Senior
Lindsay Kantor (Westhampton Beach, NY/Westhampton Beach) fell in her first set against Padmanabhan 6-0 but then made the second set interesting, despite losing it 6-4.
The Brewers will next face the California Institute of Technology on Friday, March 14 at 3:00 pm.
