FREDERICKSBURG, VA (February 22, 2014) – In a battle to remember, sophomore
Christian Phelps (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire Memorial) fought back from a 5-2 deficit in the third set against #20 North Carolina Wesleyan College's No.3 Ben Tolhurst on Saturday evening for a 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 match-clinching win in the Vassar College men's tennis 5-4 win during the University of Mary Washington Tournament.
"Phelps did a great job to pull through tough three-setter to clinch the win after a tough three set loss in the morning," said head coach
Alex Wong.
The win was the Brewers (4-1) first win over a national opponent since last year's NCAA Championships over Marywood University.
"After a tough match in the morning against Mary Washington, the team stepped up and rebounded against a tough NC Wesleyan team," said Coach Wong. "The men showed great intensity throughout the match and picked up their level of play. I give credit to the entire team for their efforts today."
Phelps and fellow sophomore captain
Daniel Cooper (Piedmont, CA/Piedmont) teamed for a dominate, 8-1 win in No. 1 doubles against Mikhail Konnov and Peter Hviid. Sophomore
Evan Udine (Delray Beach, FL/Boca Raton Community) and freshman
