NEW HAVEN, CT (February 1, 2014) -- Despite seeing the Vassar sabre squad go 6-3 against Yale University, the Brewers were unable to pull the upset over the Bulldogs, dropping the match with the hosts 16-11. VC turned around and rebounded well, breezing by the Rangers of Drew University 21-6 to earn a split Saturday in men's fencing action from the Yale Fencing Salon.
Against the hosts, Yale knocked off the Brewers but not without some great efforts. Senior
John Arden and Zach Wilson each went 2-1 in sabre, while
Kenny Lee and
Elam Coalson each earned a win.
In men's epee, Vassar saw
Ry Farley and
Jackson Dammann each go 2-1, but the depth and strength of Yale's foil team helped the Bulldogs past VC. In the victory over Drew, Arden posted two more wins, while
Giovanni Zaccheo and
Tre Artis each had two wins apiece in foil. Bobby Maiocco also added two wins for Vassar.
On the afternoon, Arden led the squad with four wins, while Wilson and Dammann each added three victories.
