Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (December 6, 2014) – Stevens Institute of Technology shot 53.3 percent in the opening half, building a big lead in knocking off the Vassar College women's basketball team 72-55 in non-conference play from the Athletics and Fitness Center Saturday afternoon.
The win for Stevens (5-1) snapped the win streak at home for the Brewers, which had spanned 10 games going back to the 2013-14 season. The contest also another streak ended, as junior guard
Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) saw her consecutive games streak of 20 or more points in a game stopped at five contests.
Stevens came out of the gate quick, and used a 9-2 run midway through the opening period to take a 24-10 lead. VC (4-3) saw the Duck's advantage swell up to 18, but the Brewers battled back just before half to send the teams into the locker room with a 38-26 Stevens' lead. Freshman
Ariella Rosenthal (Mill Valley, CA/Redwood) led all scorers in the opening stanza with nine points.
In the closing period, the Brewers got the deficit down to eight on a pair of occasions, with the latest coming at 14:15 on the clock after a jumper from Drakeley. Stevens though would increase the lead to as much as 21, as Vassar went 8:11 without a field goal down the stretch as the Ducks pulled away for the win.
Junior
Colleen O'Connell (Maywood, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) posted her second-straight double-double on Saturday, as she posted 15 points and a game-best 11 rebounds. Rosenthal posted a team and career-best 17 points for the Brewers, shooting 5-of-14 from the field. The Brewers struggled from the floor, making just 31.3 percent (21-67) from the field, including going 1-of-12 (8.3 percent) from deep.
Stevens was paced by the 20 points from Kaitlyn Astel, while Miranda Ripken added 12 points. Three other players posted eight or more points, as the Ducks out-rebounded Vassar 41-40 and shot 46.6 percent (27-58) from the floor. The 72 points for the Ducks was the most a VC opponent has scored in the AFC since allowing William Smith College to post 73 points last January 11, coincidentally the last loss for Vassar at home before today.
The Brewers are right back in action Monday evening, battling No. 9 Montclair State University at 6 p.m. in non-conference action from Montclair, NJ.
