BABSON PARK, MA (November 15, 2014) -- Junior Linnett Graber and sophomores Giovanna Pickering and Ashley Snyder each scored 10 points, helping Babson College with a 66-55 victory over Vassar College at the Babson Invitational Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Staake Gymnasium, in their first ever meeting.
Sophomore Taylor Russell contributed nine points and three rebounds for the Beavers. Junior Megan Otto had eight points and one rebound, while sophomore Jennifer Narlee contributed eight points, six rebounds and two assists to the win.
Brewers' senior Allyson Pemberton (Weston, MA/Weston) had 15 points and three rebounds while junior Colleen O'Connell (Maywood, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) notched 13 points in her first game following a season off due to injury. Junior Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) and freshman Ariella Rosenthal (Mill Valley, CA/Mill Valley) each contributed seven points for the Brewers.
The Green and White started the game out slowly but tied the game at 11-11 with 10:49 left in the period, and continued to dominate, with Russell scoring a layup and Otto, Russell, Ferola, and Graber all following that with free throws. A Rosenthal jump shot pulled Vassar within three at 20-17 with 5:31 left before the break, but the Beavers had found their momentum and continued to lead at the half, 28-19.
The Brewers got within nine on four occasions early in the second half, but Babson played a strong game, and was never threatened down the stretch.Â
The Beavers shot 46 percent (26-for-56) from the floor for the game and knocked down 13 free throws, but struggled from beyond the arc, making only one of six attempts. Vassar shot just 30 percent (17-for-57) from the field, and scored two three-pointers of six attempts. Vassar also held a 45-32 advantage in rebounds, led by the 12 from junior Rose Serafini (Milton, Ontario, Canada/Milton Area).Â
Vassar will look to even its record Sunday afternoon against No. 15 Williams College at 1 p.m. in more non-conference action.
