Brewer Men's Fencers Shine At Cleveland State University Saturday

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 18, 2014) -- Saturday saw head coach Bruce Gillman and his Vassar College men's fencing team take part in the Cleveland State Invitational, as the Brewers won five of the six matches they competed in.
  
Despite falling in a nailbiter to the hosts Cleveland State 14-13 to start the day, Vassar rebounded to win the final five bouts of the afternoon. VC took down Detroit-Mercy 17-10, and earned a hard-fought 15-12 win over Wayne State University. The Brewers had no problem with Case Western Reserve and the University of Florida, defeating both teams by a score of 20-7. Vassar finished the Invitational with a 17-10 victory over the University of Michigan.

In the first match of the day with Cleveland State, the Brewers fell 14-13, and in foil lost four bouts 5-4. In that match, Elam Coalson was 3-0 in sabre, with fellow sabre teammates Zach Wilson and Campbell Woods going 2-1. Matt Steinschneider was 2-1 in foil as well.

Against Detroit-Mercy, Vassar was led by the foil and epee teams, as both went 6-3. Ry Farley was 2-0 in epee, while Tre Artis added three wins against the Titans. Wilson and Coalson each finished 2-0 as well in the match.

Later in the day, Coalson was 2-0 in sabre and Giovanni Zaccheo and Artis each added two wins in foul against Wayne State. Steinschneider was 3-0 against Case Western, while Zaccheo and Artis earned wins in both of their foil bouts. Wilson was a perfect 3-0 with the sabre, and Bobby Maiocco and Jackson Dammann each added three wins.

The sabre and epee lineups dominated in the match against Florida Gators, going 7-2 with both weapons. The Brewers finished the day with another win against Michigan, as Farley and Steinschneider were both 3-0.

On the afternoon, Steinschneider was a stellar 14-3 to up his season recordto 36-13, while Coalson added a 12-2 mark in sabre. Wilson finished 12-4 over his 16 bouts, and Artis was 10-4 in sabre. Farley upped his seasonal ledger to 34-14 with a 10-4 record in epee, and Maiocco finished with 10 wins.

Vassar is back in action this upcoming Saturday at the Boston College Invitational.
