Men's Tennis Reaches For Win at Brandeis, Drops Short, 5-4; Falls to MIT, 8-0

CAMBRIDGE, MA/WALTHAM, MA (March 1-2, 2013) – The Vassar College men's tennis team fell 8-0 to Northeast Regionally ranked #8 Massachusetts Institute of Technology Friday evening and then came close to an upset victory over regionally ranked #10 Brandeis College, 5-4 Saturday.

Vassar was tied, 4-4 with Brandeis after wins by the freshman doubles team of Christian Phelps and Daniel Cooper and singles wins by seniors Andrew Guzick, Nick Jasso and a win from Phelps before giving up a close, third set loss in the final singles match, seven hours after the doubles matches started.

The pair of losses sets the Brewers back to a 3-7 record as they will next travel to California for their annual Spring Break trip where they will face off against Caltech on Tuesday, March 12 at 4:00 pm in Pasadena. Brandeis evens its record at 3-3 and will next travel to play Oneonta State and Middlebury on Saturday, March 9 at Middlebury. MIT's record stays flawless at 6-0, next hosting Bates College on Wednesday, March 6 at 4:00 pm.

Phelps and Cooper defeated Brandeis's Alex Siegel and Michael Secular, 8-4, being the only doubles team to walk away with a weekend victory. Jasso pulled out a close, No. 3 spot first set win, 7-6(3) before finishing Dave Yovanoff, 6-3 in the final set.

Vassar No. 1 spot and #17 regionally ranked Guzick went three sets with regionally ranked #11 Steven Milo for a tiebreaker, upset win in the third set, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(1). Phelps took on Secular at the No. 5 spot for another third set win for the Brewers, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.

Four matches in total went to three sets.

The No. 2 doubles team of Jasso and senior Josh Kessler fell in a close, 9-7 match to Yovanoff and Mitch Krems while Guzick and senior Dan Freeman fell, 8-6 to Milo and Josh Jordan.

Guzick came close to a win against MIT's #15 regionally ranked Edwin Zhang but fell in the third set, 6-2 on Friday.
