Strong Third Quarter Leads Men's Lacrosse to 13-11 Win Over Mount Saint Mary

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 16, 2013) – Sophomore midfielder Sean Brazier scored a career-high five goals, including both the go-ahead score in the third quarter and a key insurance goal late in the fourth, to lead the Vassar College men's lacrosse team to a 13-11 victory over visiting Mount Saint Mary College Saturday afternoon at Weinberg Field.

Today's game marked the first meeting between the two schools in men's lacrosse and was a closely contested affair throughout; neither team would lead by more than three goals at any point. Although Vassar scored the first two goals of the game, it would be the Knights who took a 5-4 lead into halftime as Henry Schof scored off a Sebastian Cina, Jr. pass with just four seconds left in the second quarter.

Vassar evens their record to 3-3 and will next travel to Utica College on Wednesday, March 20 at 1:00 pm. The Knights drop to an even 3-3 record and will next face SUNYIT on Tuesday, March 19 at 6:00 pm.

The Brewers struck back quickly after halftime, however, seizing the lead for good with three unanswered goals in the first six and a half minutes. Freshman midfielder Shane Flattery tied the score with an unassisted goal and Brazier took an assist from freshman attack Colin Cederna to put Vassar ahead to stay just 1:42 after halftime.

Vassar would score six times in the third quarter and led 10-6 until MSMC scored with two seconds left in the period. Although the Knights would draw within one goal, Brazier kept the Brewers two steps ahead for the duration with an unassisted goal at the 5:57 mark.

Junior attack Max Herman and sophomore midfielder Scott Brekne each had two goals and an assist for the Brewers while freshman attack Noah Parson notched one goal and handed out three assists to supplement Brazier's efforts. Junior goalie Andrew Nicol made 11 saves.

Andrew Pullen paced Mount Saint Mary with five goals; Stephen White added a hat trick and Nick Findlay dished out seven assists to pace the Knights. Conor Haran made 14 saves in net for MSMC.
