POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 2, 2012) – The Vassar College men's fencing team celebrated Senior Day at Kenyon Hall on Saturday with a 2-1 afternoon highlighted by some outstanding individual and team efforts. The Brewers fell to Yale in a competitive match, and defeated both Drew and Hunter.
Men's Sabre was a strong point being undefeated as a squad, with 6-3 squad victories over Yale, Drew, and Hunter. The catalyst was squad leader
John Arden who went 9-0.
Tavish Pegram went 6-1 in epee and
Matt Steinschneider was 6-2 in foil.
Yale 17, Vassar 10
The atmosphere in Kenyon Gym was much better for Vassar than when the match was at Yale for the past three seasons. The supportive Senior Day crowd helped to lift the Vassar sabre squad to a 6-3 win. Epee and foil fared less well at 3-6 and 1-8 respectively, but the match was competitive.
Vassar 15, Drew 12
This match was close against a school that Vassar did not fence last season. Drew has a solid epee squad. Pegram went 2-1 in the round, but the only other win came from
Nico Mongillo, resulting in a 3-6 finish. Foil and sabre had great rounds at 6-3 each to put Vassar on top with Steinschneider and Arden both 3-0.
Vassar 19, Hunter 8
Vassar foil dominated in this round with
Alex Vastola and
Tre Artis both going 3-0 and Steinschneider and
Giovanni Zaccheo combining for 3 more victories to make it a 9-0 round. Epee was 4-5 and sabre 6-3.
Now 11-13 on the season, the Brewers will travel to NYU on Thursday to face both New York University and Columbia.
