POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 23, 2013) – A pair of freshman made impressive debuts for the Vassar College men's lacrosse team, which ran off to a 10-2 lead early in the third period and started the 2013 season off win a bang in defeating Maritime College 15-9 on a damp and cool Saturday at Weinberg Field.

Freshman attacks Colin Cederna and Noah Parson each netted a hat trick and added two assists as the Brewers displayed a proficient offensive game in scoring seven straight goals in earning the victory. The Brewers did the chunk of their scoring in the second and third periods, with six goals in each.

Vassar starts the season 1-0 – and with a second straight opening game win over Maritime – and will next travel to Kean on February 27 for a 6:00 p.m. game. Maritime (0-1) next hosts Western Connecticut on February 27 at 7:00 p.m.

Maritime had a short-lived 1-0 lead off a goal by junior Mike Johnson just 2:46 into the game, but Cederna scored two of Vassar's next three goals and the Brewers were en route to a highly productive offensive game. Eight different players scored goals, including two by junior Max Herman, sophomore Scott Brekne and senior Ryan McCarthy, who had an excellent all-around game. Herman had three assists in the game. Brekne had 11 ground balls.

Herman's second goal, with 3:11 to play in the third period, pushed Vassar comfortably ahead 14-4. Maritime made the fourth period an interesting affair, scoring five goals, two coming from junior James D'Amico, who had three goals in the contest.

Though the Privateers made a run, the Vassar lead was too substantial for a complete comeback. Each team had 40 shots in the contest, but the Brewers were exceedingly more effective against a trio of Maritime goalies.

Vassar junior goalie Andrew Nicol made 17 saves in the contest.

Senior goalie Nick Barbuto played the first half for Maritime and suffered the loss. He made seven saves.
