POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 16, 2013) – The Vassar College fencing squad entertained five teams in Walker Field House for the Matt Lampell Hudson River Invitational Saturday, going 5-0 on the day and earning the team win for the day.
The Brewers earned wins in all five matches, posting at least 20 bout victories in all of the team's contests. Vassar started the day with a 21-6 win over Marist, as the foil team went 8-1 against the Red Foxes. Seniors Matt Steinschneider (Fairfield, CT/Greens Farms Academy) and Giovanni Zaccheo (New York, NY/Hunter College HS) went 3-0 in foil, while Zach Wilson (Rochester, NY/Allendale Columbia School) won three bouts at sabre and Ry Farley (Pasadena, CA/Waverly School) won all three of his epee bouts.
The next match of the day saw the Brewers earn a 22-5 win over Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute. Wilson and Campbell Woods (Newport Beach, CA/Corona Del Mar) were perfect in sabre, while Steinschneider and Zaccheo earned three wins in foil. Epee saw Bobby Maiocco (Springfield, IL/Sacred Heart-Griffin) and Jackson Dammann (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greely) also were undefeated against the Engineers.
The next two matches saw Vassar earn emphatic wins, knocking off Bard 25-2 and Cornell 26-1. The last match of the afternoon was against the University of Albany, which was won by VC with a score of 23-4. On the day, Steinschneider was stellar, going 14-0 on the afternoon, while Zaccheo won 12 of his 13 bouts. Junior Tre Artis (Jamaica, NY/Benjamin Cardozo) earned a 12-2 record at foil, and Dammann and Maiocco were both 14-1 on the afternoon.
The Brewers showed their depth in sabre, as the squad deployed six fencers, going 36-9 as a group. Wilson finished 9-1, Woods was 4-0 and Kenny Lee (Whitestone, NU/Stuyvesant) and Clayton Marr (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) each earned seven bout wins at sabre. As a team, the Brewers went a total 117-18 on the day in taking the title.
Vassar (8-4) will now head to the Sacred Heart Tournament December 8 in Fairfield, CT.
