Box Score
MORRISVILLE, NY (October 5, 2013) – The Vassar College offensive firepower certainly came to work Saturday afternoon, as the Brewer field hockey team cruised past Morrisville State College 10-0 in non-conference play.
The Brewers (6-4) came out firing right out of the gates, netting their first goal on an unassisted goal from
Dara Davis (Guilford, CT/Guilford) just 1:54 into the game on a scramble in front of the cage. 15 minutes later, senior
Liz Raskopf (North Salem, NY/North Salem) took a pass from
Haley Merritt (Northport, NY/Northport) and scored to double the Brewer lead to two.
Freshman
Emma Bracken (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) netted her first tally as a Brewer minutes later, and
Lauren Wiebe (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker) scored the first of her three goals Saturday at the 28:57 mark with help from
Hayley Beach (Latham, NY/Shaker). Beach scored off of an
Anna Schroeder (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) assist right before halftime to send VC into the break up five.
Vassar outshot their hosts 37-0 in the first period, and earned all nine penalty corners during the opening stanza. After the halftime intermission, Davis again opened the period with a goal, this time getting help from senior
Kerrin Poole (Scituate, MA/Thayer Academy). The two-goal contest for Davis marked the first time in her career she has netted multiple goals in a game.
Wiebe netted back-to-back tallies after the Davis score to earn her first career hat trick, upping her season total to nine. The hat trick is the first for a Brewer since Maura McCarthy accomplished the feat September 3, 2011 against Keystone College, and it's only the fourth over the last eight seasons for VC. Wiebe's goal total of nine moves her into the top five within the conference.
Senior
Tina Caso (Carmel, NY/Carmel) tallied at the 60:50 mark of the contest, and Schroeder finished the scoring for the Brewers in the final minute of play with an unassisted tally. On the day, the Brewers posted the most goals in a game ever with 10, breaking the previous mark of nine set last year against Morrisville. Also, the shot total of 69 shattered the previous school record of 46 shots taken back in 2002 at Union College.
VC outshot its hosts 69-1 on the afternoon, and keepers
Maggie Brelis (Cambridge, MA/BB&N) and
Amreen Bhasin (Cresskill, NJ/Riverdale) combined for the shutout. Vassar earned all but one of the game's 16 penalty corners, the highest total of the season. Schroeder posted two helpers for the Brewers Saturday.
Vassar will jump back into conference play Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. hosting Skidmore College on Weinberg Field.
