Women's Tennis Rolls With the Rain at Morehouse Invite

Results

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA (September 8, 2012) – Ava Sadeghi and Winifred Yeates highlighted the Lindsay Morehouse Invite on day one for the Vassar College women's tennis team winning two of their three matches.

Sophomore Sadeghi and freshman Yeates dropped their first match to a pair from Middlebury 9-8 (8-6) but picked up a pair of wins against Nancy Worley and Riqui McCoy of Williams 8-6 and against Caroline Hobbs and Alex Smith of Skidmore 8-4.

Sadeghi picked up a singles win over Leah Kepping of Middlebury (6-3, 7-5) which keeps her undefeated streak going strong. She will play another singles match tomorrow.

Rain forced the action to go inside for the remaining of the day. “We spent most of the day indoors probably from 12:30 until 7:30,” women's head coach Kathy Campbell said. “The transition going inside was difficult at first because they have four quality courts which are good and then they had four courts in their field house which were more challenging with them being harder to see. In all, we made the transition well but we are looking forward to going outside again tomorrow.”

Besides Vassar, the Morehouse Invite featured Williams (hosts), Skidmore, Middlebury and Bowdoin. All five teams are amongst the top 20 teams in the nation. “Everyone was really pumped coming into this about the prospect of the upcoming season and the opportunity to face these schools,” Campbell said. “This is a great tournament because everyone gets to play and you get to see all of your players perform in a super competitive arena with going against the five of the top 20 schools.”

In other doubles action, Lauren Stauffer and Samantha Schapiro lost all three of their matches but two of them were almost upsets. “The teams that Lauren and Sam (Schapiro) have played are three of the toughest teams in the nation and are known for being some of the very best but two of their matches were really close and really promising,” Campbell said.

Today, there was only one round of singles, with the second round to be played tomorrow due to rain and three rounds of doubles. On Sunday, there will be three rounds of singles.  No overall winner of the event is determined at the invitational's conclusion. Instead, the invitational is a kick off to the fall season emphasizing participation and match experience prior to the ITA and other individual tournaments later in the fall season.
