Ava and Sam Holding Awards
GENEVA, NY (September 24, 2012) – Ava Sadeghi won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional singles tournament to reclaim her title and make All-American for the second time while also pairing with Samantha Schapiro to win the doubles tournament Monday afternoon at Williams Smith College.

This is Schapiro's first All-American honors and the first time in Vassar's long and prestigious history that the Brewers have won both singles and doubles at the ITA Regionals.

The Brewers will next host New York University and SUNY New Paltz on September 30 at 9:00 am.

Sadeghi defeated third seed Jessica Bourque of Stevens Institute of Technology 7-6, 6-3 in semifinal action. She then went on to claim her second ITA Northeast Regional championship in a row against fifth seed Nataly Mendoza of Skidmore College 7-6, 7-4. “She handled everything extremely well by playing very composed but also very aggressive matches,” head coach Kathy Campbell said. “She was down in the quarters, semifinals and finals but always managed to come back to win them and she didn't give up one game on her singles and doubles on Saturday.”

Sadeghi played a total of 11 matches in three days. “Her fitness clearly never let her down especially considering the level of play and competition that she faced in her three days here,” Campbell said.

Sadeghi and Schapiro will both head to Mobile, Alabama for the ITA National Championship on October 11-14. This is Schapiro's first ever All-American honors and Sadeghi's first All-American in doubles. The duo defeated third seeded Paige Aiello and Karisse Bendijo of The College of New Jersey 8-3 and then claimed the title against fourth seed Teru Greene and Kiara Ocaslo of William Smith 6-2, 6-3.

“They were never behind in any of their matches,” Campbell said. “They played very smart, they played to their strengths and they set the points and each other up with penetrating ground strokes and were able to approach very well. If you're never behind in a doubles match against this level of play and tough competition, then that says something.”

Freshmen Winifred Yeates and Lauren Stauffer played solid doubles play in round one. They defeated Chelsea Lipp and Deanna Williams from Drew University 8-4. “Winning their first round was excellent considering this was the first time they have played together,” Campbell said. “It is also an impressive thing to state that the team they lost to was the team from William Smith who Ava [Sadeghi] and Sam [Schapiro] defeated for the championship title and it was a very strong match.”

“This was a shining weekend for our program. We had seven people playing with five singles and two doubles,” Campbell said. “We had the most of any team and played 23 total matches. 18 of those matches were our victories.”
