Day Two Results
WILLIAMSTOWN, MA (September 9, 2012) – The Vassar College women's tennis team finished the second day of Williams College's Lindsay Morehouse Invitational Sunday after most of day one was postponed due to rain.
The Brewers will head to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regionals at William Smith in Geneva, NY for the three-day contest September 22-24.
The weather delay from Saturday hindered the invitational by forcing most of day one's competition to head for shelter. The weather shaped up for day two as all of the matches were held outside in the sun.
Samantha Schapiro highlighted day two for Vassar College winning all three of her matches after dropping one on day one. Schapiro first defeated Kate Pollan of Williams (6-1, 6-1). She then beat Alex Smith (6-4, 6-4) and Robyn Baird (6-1, 6-1) of Skidmore College. “Sam (Schapiro) demonstrated a tremendous amount of improvement and composure on the court and especially against such high-ranked opponents,” head coach
Kathy Campbell said.
Freshmen
Kelsey Van Noy and Winifred Yeates picked up their first collegiate wins in singles matches. Van Noy defeated Rachel Plevinsky of Skidmore 7-6 (5-0), 6-3 while Yeates beat Middlebury College's Kirra Simonson 6-1, 7-6 (7-0). “Our performance this weekend just backs up our beliefs,” Campbell said. “We have five new doubles pairs and we're feeling good about our doubles and our potential after what we saw this weekend. Our freshmen have adapted really well to the level of play at the college level and against nationally ranked players and teams so everyone is feeling really motivated.”
