AMHERST, MA (May 12, 2012) -- The Vassar College men's tennis team defeated The College of New Jersey 5-1 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championships, making history with its first trip to the round of 16.
The Brewers (15-10) play defending national champion and top-ranked Amherst College in the third round on Sunday, May 13, at 9:00 am.
Vassar took a 2-1 lead after doubles and picked up three singles points en route to a 5-1 win over TCNJ. Brothers
Ben Guzick and
Andrew Guzick led off with an 8-5 win over Stewart Fernandez and Howard Telson at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2,
Dan Freeman and
Josh Kessler showed fine form in an 8-2 victory over Steven Fernandez and TJ Riley. TCNJ's lone point came at No. 3 doubles as Marc Nichols and Jordan Cruz gleaned a tight 8-6 win over
Nick Jasso and
Wilson Platt.
In singles,
Andrew Guzick got the ball rolling with a quick 6-1, 6-0 win over Steven Fernandez at No. 1 singles to put Vassar ahead 3-1. Kessler carried his doubles dominance into singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jordan Cruz at No. 6 for a 4-1 lead. Playing with a chip on his shoulder, Jasso clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Stewart Fernandez.
