Men's Tennis Reaches League Championship With 5-3 Win Over Hobart

GENEVA, NY (April 29, 2012) — The No. 2 seeded Vassar College men's tennis team advanced to its eighth consecutive Liberty League Championship title match with a 5-3 win over the No. 3 seed Hobart College in the Liberty League Championship semifinals on Sunday at Bristol Field House. 

The Brewers (14-9, 4-1 Liberty), ranked No. 11 in the ITA Northeast, face the top-seeded Skidmore, ranked No. 22 nationally and No. 6 in the Northeast, on Monday, April 30 at 10 am. The Thoroughbreds defeated No. 4 RPI 5-0 in the other semifinal played this morning.

Vassar took a  2-1 lead after doubles with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Andrew Guzick and Ben Guzick rolled 8-3 over Bruce Grant and Michael Fields at the No. 1 spot. Wilson Platt and Nick Jasso came through with an 8-6 win over Sam DeLuccia and Kevin Bates at No. 3 doubles.

Hobart evened the match at 2-2 with a win by retirement at the No. 4 position. At No. 1, Andrew Guzick made routine work of Grant 6-3, 6-2 to put Vassar up 3-2. Ben Guzick earned a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 for the Brewers to stretch their lead to 4-2.

Hobart pulled within 4-3 with a win at No. 3 singles but Josh Kessler shut the door for Vassar with a 6-3, 7-6  win at No. 6 to clinch the 5-3 decision.
