POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 14, 2012) – The Vassar College men's lacrosse team was outgunned by No. 9 nationally ranked Rochester Institute of Technology 19-6 at Gordon Field on Saturday in Liberty League action.

A suffocating RIT defense held the Brewers to just six goals, while the Tigers' fast-paced offense proved too much for Vassar to handle.

RIT jumped out to a 4-0 lead to start the contest before senior Christopher Toffoli put Vassar on the board. RIT extended their lead to 5-1 after the first quarter and 9-2 at the half.

“We ran into a very talented team today," said head coch Marc Graham. "The RIT coach (Jake Coon) said it's the best they've played all year.” The Tigers were ranked as high as No. 4 nationally until a close 11-7 loss to RPI on April 7.

Vassar (3-8, 0-4) continues Liberty League play next Saturday traveling to Union College for a 7:00 pm game. The following week the Brewers conclude regular season play with a Senior Day game against Clarkson University at 1:00 pm. RIT (9-2, 2-1) continues Liberty League play hosting Union on Wednesday and Skidmore College on Saturday.

In the third quarter, RIT extended its lead to 17-3, but the Brewers battled back outscoring the Tigers 3-2 in the final frame. Toffoli scored the first of Vassar's fourth quarter goals off an assist from senior Jeff Lee. Lee and classmate Jack Gross notched the other two Vassar tallies.

The RIT offense pounded Vassar firing 51 shots at Vassar goalkeeper Andrew Nicol who made 20 saves, many of which were spectacular.

RIT registered 51 shots on goal compared to 19 from Vassar. The Tigers also controlled the faceoff circle winning 17 of 29 draws.

On the defensive end, RIT won the groundball battle 50-25.

Tyler Russell led RIT with five goals, while Toffoli and Lee each led Vassar with two.

Senior Matthew Pearce and Russell each led their respective teams with a game-high nine groundballs.
