CLAREMONT, CA (March 7, 2012) -- The Vassar College women's tennis team went down 4-0 against the Intercollegiate Tennis Association No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer but fought back for a narrow 5-4 loss.

"We're super proud of the way we played and the way we fought," said head coach Kathy Campbell. "We lost to this team 9-0 last year and while it's disappointing to lose, we're going to move forward and take the good from it."

After dropping all three doubles matches and No. 1 singles, Vassar trailed 4-0 but rattled off three wins to pull within 4-3 before the magic ran out and Pomona-Pitzer clinched the match with a three-set victory at No. 3 singles.

The ITA No. 25 Brewers next face Trinity University (TX) on Thursday, March 8, at 1:30 p.m.

Down 4-0, Vassar came alive in singles and had a serious chance at an upset, taking the first set in four of the five remaining matches. Vassar would need all five points.

Junior Jennifer Ruther put Vassar on the board with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Emily Kawahara at No. 5 singles. Freshman Ava Sadeghi followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Kara Wang at No. 2 singles and classmate Hannah Van Demark capped the run with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Kristin Brikmanis at No. 6 to pull within 4-3.

At this point, Vassar needed to win the final two matches at No. 3 and No. 4 and both were in tight third sets. The Sagehens beat the Brewers to the punch as Arthi Padmanabhan finished off senior Joy Backer 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 to clinch the victory at 5-3. Soon after, freshman Samantha Schapiro collected the final point with a comeback 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Nicole Holsted at No. 4 singles.
