NEW YORK, NY (February 27, 2012) – Following a grueling day of heavy competition at the New England Championships on Saturday, the Vassar College men's fencing team competed at the United States Collegiate Squad Championships on Sunday at New York University.
The Brewers fielded a team in the Open Team Men's Epee competition and were seeded No. 14 in the competition with a team of seniors Nick Johnson and
Brian Rouse and sophomore Nicholas Mongillo. Vassar drew No. 3 seed Sacred Heart in the opening round and lost 45-34. Sacred Heart advanced two additional rounds before being derailed by Princeton.
Vassar did not field teams in either the Foil or Sabre competition.
"The squad championships involved teams from all over the United States and isis a revival of the century old IFA Chapionships," said head coach
Bruce Gillman. "Although we didn't advance far, being at such a prestigious event was well worth the trip for our epee fencers."
This Saturday, March 11, the Brewers will travel to Boston College to compete in the Northeast Regional Qualifer. The NCAA Championships are March 22-25 at Ohio State University.
